Time Warp, by Mary Helen Gill

It’s the year 2018 and middle aged Andy Johnston is taking his normal mid-day walk along Princess Street in Edinburgh when he stops to gaze in a jeweler’s shop window. There quite near to the window is the most unusual fob watch he has ever seen. It is gold, and the backing is a mixture of Royal Stewart Tartan and gold. The longish chain, meant for hanging from the waistcoat pocket, is also gold. He is intensely attracted to this watch, especially the gold roman figures, and black hands. He enters the shop to enquire how much it would cost to purchase.
Regardless of the price which is indeed high, he pulls out his credit card and makes the purchase. Had he been aware in advance of the secret powers of this watch and of the troubles ahead, he might have thought more than twice about this purchase. Because mainly of the price one has to pay to own it–it has sat in this window for a very long time. The Jeweler warns him as he writes out the guarantee and sales slip, that he might just regret having bought it, as time passes. Strange occurrences begin as soon as he sets foot outside of the shop and makes his way proudly to the nearby park below Edinburgh Castle.
The famous big Ben clock in London normally ticks on and on, through time. Every hour, on the hour, it sends its loud gongs across London, announcing the time, and almost deafening those who happen to be near. The population of London set their watches and clocks daily to Big Ben, and would be completely lost without it. Further away in Edinburgh Scotland, high up in the Castle rock stands the big one o’clock gun- A big cannon that goes off regularly at one o’clock, every day, freezing people to the spot for a few moments, and rattling old people’s bones with the vibration it causes, whilst they also check their watches, and in the houses, all clocks are set the same way.
The gun resounds across the City of Edinburgh, and will be missed terribly if it does not go off. As we live with this kind of repetition, so our lives are dependent on the repetition of our heart beats. The day that beat stops forever, our lives are over, just as when the clocks stop, time stands still. One of Nostradamus’s predictions are about to come true. Andy is unaware of the disruption of those elements his watch is about to cause, and innocently shows it off to his friends in the park. The watch enjoys its new found freedom of not being cooped up in the Jeweler’s shop window and big changes are made to time.
Andy and his wife Amy Johnston live in an old Edinburgh City Tenement, above which the Castle looms. They rely each day on the one o’clock gun going off in the castle, even though the loud boom rocks the dishes on the kitchen shelf, and just about bursts their ear drums when it goes off, Edinburgh would not be the same without it.
So far time has passed over Nostradamus’s predictions, of life and the world coming to an end. Panic strikes in cities all over the United Kingdom, when suddenly, and unexpectedly, Big Ben begins losing time, and the one o clock gun in Edinburgh fires too soon. There must be a reason! All clocks begin to lose time or stop altogether. When people begin to keel over and die of obvious sudden and unexplained heart failure, panic takes hold. Andy and Amy eventually can’t take it anymore when their neighbours begin fighting because they don’t understand what is happening to them. They then decide to pack a few bags and travel to Amy’s sister Ellie who lives in the Northern Hebrides.
Andy has time to think when on the train, and eventually realizes the meaning of strange dreams he has been having, and discovers he has oracle powers. He actually had predicted the standing still of time, when he was a boy, and now it is all coming to light. No one understands why he becomes so attached to his watch, or why it does not stop as all other watches are now doing Neighbors gang up on him accusing him of some kind of lechery. Only backing off when they discover his predicti

Leon's voice is easy to listen to because he is not ultimately didactic ...
By DAVID A CASTRO
Just sat down this morning and read this book from cover to cover. Leon's voice is easy to listen to because he is not ultimately didactic or highly diagnostic on which 'season' you are in, nor is he supercilious or preachy. He trusts the Lord to enlighten his reader as he simply uses scripture to highlight each season. His voice is humble and testimonial in nature which makes it easy to consider his points and encouragements. I appreciate that he uses scripture most heavily to support his points, which I think shows his main source of encouragement was meditation on scripture instead of heavy citation of secondary--though perhaps theologically solid--Christian book authors. Lastly, as someone who has experienced a season of loss that can be defined as suffering perhaps, it was evident that Leon is no stranger to suffering. Not simply because he shares details, but because the spirit in which he writes validates that experience. Well worth reading - I recommend this book.

In this beautifully written and brilliantly reasoned book, Ayn Rand throws a new light on the nature of art and its purpose in human life. Once again Miss Rand eloquently demonstrates her refusal to let popular catchwords and conventional ideas stand between her and the truth as she has discovered it. The Romantic Manifesto takes its place beside The Fountainhead as one of the most important achievements of our time.

About the Author
AYN RAND is the author of "Anthem, The Fountainhead, " and "Atlas Shrugged", and numerous non-fiction essays on philosophy, ethics, politics, art, and literature. Her philosophy, Objectivism, has gained a worldwide audience of adherents and admirers. She died in March 1982.

From AudioFile
This collection of essays is an aesthetic manifesto calling for a rebirth of romantic art and a systematic description of what the author believes is dysfunctional about modern aesthetics. Bernadette Dunne is a good match for Rand's voice, delivering the novelist's passionate convictions with a metered cadence. Dunne's clear conveyance of Rand's essays is important because her ideas are quite controversial. Dunne's voice has an empirical and authoritative tone that demands a full and concise hearing. This is a great feat considering the author is attempting to debunk most of the art movements since Romanticism as self-serving, purposeless, and superficial. This is a thought-provoking listen if one is interested in discovering the rigid philosophies behind Rand's iconic novels. L.P. AudioFile 2009, Portland, Maine

Entertaining and illuminating
By Peter Uys
This is a compelling work on the nature and meaning of art. Besides containing Rand's manifesto, it is also a highly entertaining piece of criticism and analysis of art, culture and psychology.

In the introductory chapter: The Psycho-Epistemology Of Art, Rand defines art as a selective recreation of reality according to the artist's metaphysical value judgements. Art brings one's concepts to the perceptual level of conscience and enables one to grasp them directly as if they were precepts.

Chapter 2, Philosophy And Sense Of Life, deals with the "merciless recorder" that is the integrating mechanism of the subconscious mind. The next chapter, Art And Sense Of Life, opens with a fascinating observation on a hypothetical painting. Here Rand further explains the concept of a sense of life as it manifests in art. She argues that the emotion involved in art is automatically immediate and that it holds a deeply personal value-significance to the person experiencing it.

Art And Cognition is devoted to the question: What are the valid forms of art, and why? Here the author explores literature, painting, sculpture, music and architecture in turn. I find her speculations on music particularly thought-provoking.

Rand refers to Aristotle in discussing the attributes of the novel in Basic Principles Of Literature: theme, plot, characterization and style. Chapter 6 provides a definition of Romanticism, which recognizes volition, as opposed to Naturalism which denies it. She identifies determinism as the basic premise of naturalism in The Aesthetic Vacuum Of Our Age and hails the appearance of the novel in the 19th century as the vehicle of Romanticism.

Other essays include discussions on bootleg romanticism and moral treason in art, whilst the actual manifesto appears in chapter 11: The Goal Of My Writing and chapter 10: Introduction To Ninety-Three. This essay is an abbreviated version of the introduction she wrote for a 1962 edition of the book by Victor Hugo. The Romantic Manifesto concludes with The Simplest Thing In The World, a short story that illustrates the nature of the creative process.

Throughout this fascinating book, Rand provides examples of different manifestations of art plus informed criticism of personalities and a wide variety of works like Anna Karenina, Thomas Aquinas, The Avengers, Balzac, Dostoevsky, Lord Byron, Camille, Gnter Grass, Salvador Dali, Don Carlos, Dumas, Flaubert, Ian Fleming, Gone With The Wind, Goya, O Henry, Alfred Hitchcock, Victor Hugo, Boris Karloff, Fritz Lang, Ira Levin, Michelangelo, Edgar Allan Poe, Friedrich Schiller, Shakespeare, Tolstoy, Jan Vermeer, HG Wells, Thomas Wolfe and Emile Zola. Both high and popular culture is covered.

One does not need to agree with Rand's analyses and manifesto to find this a most stimulating and highly entertaining read. Many of her insights are valid and quite relevant to the state of culture and civilization today.

An Honest Opinion
By Philip John Cornell
Don't listen to Greg Nyquist. Ayn Rand is actually quite fair in her valuations of art. She does have strong opinions, but she makes it clear that although she doesn't enjoy certain authors (for various reasons), she is still able to appreciate their literary abilities. I think some people hate Ayn Rand simply because she's straight-forward and honest, both with herself and with others. Ayn Rand is not afraid to speak her mind. If this bothers you, then don't read this book. But if you want one woman's calm, rational, and well thought out opinion on art in its various manifestations, then I guarantee that you will enjoy this book.

This book is Rand's analysis of what art is.
By A Customer
Are you an artist? A painter, a sculptor or a writer perhaps... In this, the icing on the cake of all of Rand's works, you will discover EXACTLY what makes something qualify as a work of art or not and why.
Throughout her work, Rand analyzes the different types of art, mainly Romantic art and Naturalistic art. In short, Rand defines Romantic art as a painting, sculpture or writing which portrays LIFE not as life is but as life COULD and SHOULD be. For example: An artist's work displaying a painting of a building as it could and should be is a romantic art work. Rand tells of how Romanticism lived for only a brief period of time in the 19th century and possibly early twentieth century and how today it is nearly non existent. She reccommends reading, as a beautiful example of the romantic form of art, the works of Victor Hugo. Rand tells of how today the predominant form of art is what is called Naturalistic art.
Naturalistic art, says Rand, is work which portrays life as it is, exactly as it is and nothing more. Rand tells of how, in art schools of today students are encouraged to do only naturalistic works. She also mentions several authors of today's era who have come close to creating some ROMANTIC art but have fallen short.
Rand discussed how it is the PHILOSOPHY of today which promotes and encourages naturalism and deters Romanticism. This discussion will perhaps be most appreciated by those readers of Rand who appreciate and admire her works, but wonder as to what, upon careful analysis, would be the cause of the bitter political and sociological debates which rage over her ideas and works. This book is BEST for those who have read and liked her works but it is fine, standing on its own, as an analysis or what makes great art great!

Not as good as previous years' compilations.
By Jessica
I received this as a birthday gift. I'm very disappointed in this volume. I have almost all the Creative Beading books, so I thought this would be great. I know that there were some great projects last year, but those sure did not get into this book. It's supposed to be the BEST projects from a year of B&B. That's the title! I was deceived. Next time I will have to look at the actual book before putting it on my wishlist. I have the magazines, too, so I know. I just like to purchase these so I can have the best projects in one place. I'm really disappointed. Not sure if I will buy Volume 9 if B&B does a poor job again.

Excellent.
By Daniel Phoenix
In the book When No One's Watching, authors Geller and Veazie weave a fictional tale to present to the reader, in an easily digestible format, numerous ideas and theories that are the result of years of research by many different scholars on human motivation and behavior. They emphasize the practical application of these theories in a workplace setting, combining them to develop a specific management style as well as policies to be implemented that would result in happier employees who are motivated to help the company succeed. Even though the overall story is fictional, the results that are described after the specific processes are implemented at each company are far from the typical academic pipe-dream; Geller and Veazie both have many years of experience in industry, and have witnessed firsthand the resultant successes at companies that implemented these ideas. It should be a required read for anyone in upper management.

The story itself is highly engaging, easily understandable, and very effective at communicating the complex concepts to anyone.

Inspirational!
By Chris Lockhart
"When No One's Watching" is a beautiful story of a woman who, after being let off from the job she has worked at for twenty years, finds herself working for a consulting firm that works to self-motivate all branches of its clients' organizations to ensure their organizations are always at optimal performance and acting the safest. As this woman, Joanna, enters into her new job, the way she sees the workplace and manager/employee relationships quickly becomes redefined - for her, the workplace changes from a saddened place where upper-management tries to bring one down into a place where dreams and ideas can blossom from even the lower reaches of the organizational hierarchy, as her consulting firm aims at creating a work culture rather than a work place. As one reads the book, motivational lessons emerge that allow one to apply the ideology being discussed in the book into one's own life and work environment.

Overall, the read was entirely fulfilling; I never wanted to put the book down! Reading about Joanna, as she learns the ways of her new consulting firm and starts to apply the firm's practices to her own husband and children too, was awe-inspiring, fully giving me the competency and understanding that I could apply the book's principles into my own life as well.

An excellent read
By Courtney Woodside
This book was an excellent read. The lessons of self-motivation were really brought to life by the stories about Joanne. It uses stories of work, family, and fun to illustrate points of self-motivation and leadership. Using fun anecdotes and stories really kept the book entertaining and educational at the same time. This was very fun to read, and was able to capture and hold my attention. For me, I do not normally enjoy reading books for class, but reading "When No One's Watching" was a pleasure and was very enjoyable. I found it hard to put the book down. It makes you think about your own decisions and how you are making them. The lessons in the book go far beyond lessons of a college classroom and extend into the real world. The book is definitely different from your normal self-motivation book. It is able to intertwine stories and lessons into a fun and interesting read. I thoroughly enjoyed reading "When No One's Watching" and would highly recommend it to anyone. It helped me put a new perspective on how I thought I was self-motivated.

From School Library Journal
Gr 9 Up—Matt and his childhood friend John have summer jobs in the Hamptons before their last year of high school. The summer has gone well, and there are only a few weeks left before school starts again. Matt will return to the selective public school in Manhattan that he has attended since freshman year, and John to the neighborhood public school. Matt hopes to get into Yale, where he wants to major in forestry so he can man a solitary outpost away from people. John wants to get his certification as an electrician like his father. Hoping to make some extra money on their day off, the boys take a couple coolers and fill them with sodas and ice cream bars and head to the beach. They meet Driana, Joo, and Estefania. What should have been a brief and anonymous exchange alters their lives when Driana invites them to a party she's having. Estefania decides to go out surfing at midnight and thus begins a tragic series of events. Clues about the characters are revealed in a leisurely manner, leaving readers to guess about their true intentions. This contrasts with the rapidity in which the plot progresses, evidenced by Matt's immediate willingness to help people he met only a short time before. VERDICT Recommend to teens who enjoyed Matt de la Pea's The Living (Delacorte, 2013) and other survival stories.—Suanne B. Roush, formerly at Osceola High School, Seminole, FL

About the Author
Paul Griffin loves being out on the water—in a boat with a working engine. Once, when he was a kid, his uncle's leaky old boat stalled. He was adrift less than an afternoon and in the relative safety of Long Island Sound, but this was scary enough to get him looking for higher ground. Now he lives in northern Manhattan, two hundred and fifty feet above sea level. He wrote the novels Ten Mile River, The Orange Houses, Stay With Me and Burning Blue, all for young adults. Fast-Paced, Compelling & Surprising: Spot-On Summer Read for Middle Graders & More
By jv poore
Reading Adrift is like floating on the ocean, basking in the sun one minute; being tugged under icy, churning waters the very next. It’s a kick-ass story delivered in an almost detached voice, packing a powerful punch. It’s gritty and raw, in a naturally understated kind of way. The story of two guys living on the border of Brooklyn and Queens with summer jobs in Montauk, selling cold drinks and ice-cream on beaches starts quickly, gaining momentum as it unfolds.

The brother-like bond between the boys is easily evident early on. Subtle suggestions of a shared, sinister moment are intriguing. An impulsive gift of slightly melted Klondike bars to three strangers (one of which is a beauty with a heart-stopping, crooked smile) immediately integrates two very different worlds and forces them to embark in a volatile, enthralling, seafaring expedition.

“Five of us went out on the water that night. None of us came back whole and not all of us came back.”

The story is, quite simply, stunning. A cunning confirmation of the importance of perception is rare and remarkably well done here. Reaching conclusions quickly, accepting the “obvious” answer when studying only one, very limited, view can be disastrous. The snippets of correspondence among law enforcement, searchers and rescuers interspersed with the narrative are shocking and scary in their simplicity.

Mr. Griffin weaves a wicked good tale; flirting with foreshadow while revealing bits of the characters’ past, creating a web of questions, confusion and abruptly apparent answers. With a diverse cast of captivating kids, an epic and mysterious escapade-turned-mission, and authentic dialogue, Adrift will have mass appeal. Appropriate for the Middle-Grade reader but too broad to be limited, Mr. Griffin’s upcoming survival story will be an awesome addition to anyone’s Summer Reading List.

Griffin offers readers a bang-up adventure story, full of all the immediate and pressing drama of survival.
By Teen Reads
As I was reading Paul Griffin's new novel ADRIFT, a news story was unfolding --- two teens disappeared from the Florida coast while out in a small boat. That real-life drama, as well as the author's admission that some of the events in ADRIFT were inspired by his own teenage misadventures, makes the seemingly larger-than-life premise of the novel seem perhaps not so outlandish after all.

Matt and John, two working-class Italian-American best friends from Queens, are working in the Hamptons over the summer to make some extra spending money. When the boys wander over to a private beach in the hopes of selling ice cream bars to the wealthy, Matt immediately hits it off with the beautiful Driana, who, at a party later that night, introduces him to her cousin Stef and Stef's boyfriend JoJo, both from Brazil.

Stef is as bold and impetuous as John is cold and distant, so when she "borrows" a Windsurfer late that night and takes it out on rough seas, no one is really surprised. Still, the four other teens know that they're going to need to help her get back on dry land. When their haste, combined with Stef's carelessness, results in their small boat drifting off shore without enough gas to get back to the mainland, it's just the start of a two-week odyssey that will leave none of the teens undamaged or unchanged.

As the drama among the desperate teens plays out aboard the boat, readers gradually learn that Matt and John have been through trauma and tragedy before --- could this new ordeal be a chance for them to remedy the horrible things that happened then? Or will the same bad decisions that led to that tragedy just come back to haunt them now?

The teens' harrowing adventure plays out one day at a time, interspersed with police transcripts that chronicle the increasingly unlikely attempts to find them alive. They'll encounter sharks and hurricanes as well as more prosaic enemies like dehydration and starvation --- and they'll constantly be wondering who, if anyone, they can trust.

Parts of ADRIFT can verge on the predictable (the teens who survive, for example, are exactly the ones you would expect to do so) and contrived (each of the teens seems well-prepared to deal with some aspect of survival, be it medical assistance, desalination or fashioning a harpoon). But parts are anything but predictable or contrived, particularly the relationships between Matt and John and between Matt and Driana, both of which prove far more complicated than most readers might expect. In ADRIFT, Griffin offers readers a bang-up adventure story, full of all the immediate and pressing drama of survival. But ADRIFT is simultaneously a story about survival of a different kind, about living through trauma and finding ways to live with oneself afterwards.

A frightening, dark tale of survival, the ocean, and the human condition, in the tradition of The Lord of the Flies.
By Autumn
Title: Adrift

Author: Paul Griffin

Age Group: Teen/Young Adult

Genre: Survivalist Fiction

Series: N/A

Star Rating: 5 Out of 5 Stars

I borrowed this book from my local library and reviewed it.

Did you enjoy Lord of the Flies when you had to read it in school? How about Hatchet? Survival stories in general? Compelling, often frightening characters forced into often brutal situations? If you answered yes to any and all of these questions, you need to go get Adrift immediately. Shut off your phone, your TV, lock your doors, get comfortable with a drink and a snack, and read this book.

You won't regret it.

I'm sorry to tell you guys this, but I haven't seen the ocean in person. Outside of the internet and pictures, I've never experienced it. And because of that, it kind of scares me a little. Between what could be lurking beneath the glossy cerulean waves, as well as the sheer mass of it, it's terrifying. But there's definitely a part of me that longs to see it, to smell it, to stick my toes in the sand..

Reading this book was like living in one of my worst nightmares. One of my librarians suggested it and ordered it for me, and now I've been bitten by the bug. I need more survivalist stories, please! I just love the creepy factor. The way the author ratchets up the fear makes me excited and paranoid all at once, and I dig it, especially if it's done well. (I honestly think I've found a new favorite author in Griffin, too..)

Matt and John, best friends but more like brothers, if not by blood, then by circumstance. They meet Driana, an exotic, beautiful girl, and her cousin, Stef, caustic and wild, and then there's Jojo, the merry, gentle giant. At a party, they all end up on the beach together. When Stef takes a midnight ride on her windsurfer out to sea, Dri, Jojo, Matt and John all go after her in a boat--and some end up paying with their lives.

This book was done so well. A momentary encounter with three rich kids, worlds away from John and Matt, ends up changing the lives of them all forever. I was seduced by this dark, creepy little read within the first few chapters, and as the night went on, I found myself feverishly turning pages, glued to the dark prose. As the group of teenagers, desperate and frightened, drift further out to sea, the tension begins to mount--how will they survive? Will they keep their sanity? Who will be the first to have their brain crack like an egg?

The prose of this novel was perfect--tense and terse, descriptive and darkly beautiful. I fell in love with this author and I will be looking for more of his work as soon as possible. But where Griffin really shines is his characters. There's Matt, struck by love at the worst possible time, and driven by a protective instinct he doesn't quite understand. And then there's stoic, silent John, a stalwart, steadfast survivor willing to do almost anything to get out of this mess alive. Dri, the poor little rich girl, who has just as much of a connection to Matt, Stef, the wild one who started this journey in the first place, and Jojo, a gentle soul--until things begin to get hard.

This book was a wonderful, but often dark, journey into the human survival instinct. How anyone can be who they really are, and then change the moment they feel as if they are about to die. Griffin raises an interesting question with Adrift: Is anyone really themselves, even when their own life is on the line? The bottom line: A wonderful meditation on the human condition and the scary situations one choice can bring on, Adrift is a blockbuster hit of the summer--a survivalist tale that recalls Lord of the Flies--simply amazing! Next on deck: The Wishing Spell by Chris Colfer!
