Good for newbies

I bought the ebook and found it could be interesting for beginners just getting making a good coffee or espresso. It is easy to understand and the step by step instructions are easy to follow. The only downside I found was that some of the pictures are a little small and pixelated when I enlarged them. The ebook is also a little pricey for what you get.

I can't believe this kindle book is only $8. It's so complete, so helpful, so step-by-step, it should be $100. I did take the 1/2 day home barista class at Seattle Barista Academy (which was great, by the way), and this book answered all the questions I had left over. I highly recommend it.

The rationale for my rating is as follows: (1) The text is somewhat difficult to follow (i.e., chapter topics do not flow well in the body of the text; one has to constantly jump around), particularly when trying to find answers to study questions and (2) The images are both numerous and well done and, thus, very beneficial. If the text would have been as well balanced as the images, I would have rated it higher. As such, if you are looking for less textual flow, but more images (i.e., if you are more of a visual oriented learner), then this is a good textbook to have.

Excellent book

Clearly the one of negative reviewers did not get this version of the book. The kindle version is not available for the 6th edition, which is the one that should be reviewed here.

As for the price of the book, mentioned by the other negative reviewer, I agree it is a bit high; but it is worth it. Most good java college class learning books (ie books by Horstmann or the Deitels) cost around this much.

As for this book, it is excellent! It uses BlueJ extensively and really gives a new programmer a solid background in OOP. I highly recommend it!

Sad snapshot of the faulty thinking that led to WWII.

Published in 1937 -- the year before Hilter's annexation of the Sudetenland -- Earnest Albert Hooton's "Apes, Men, and Morons" is an example of the then fashionable notion that the human race can save itself only by enacting aggressive measures to promote selective breeding.

From a review in AMERICAN JOURNAL OF PUBLIC HEALTH May, 1938:

"The last chapter sums up what we must do to be saved. The author recognizes that there are many gaps in our knowledge of human biology and that we do not know enough to breed geniuses, but is firm in his opinion that we must bring about a 'sit-down reproductive strike of the busy breeders among the morons, criminals, and social ineffectuals of our population.' He holds that a biological purge is the essential prerequisite for a social and spiritual salvation. 'We must stop trying to cure malignant biological growths with patent sociological nostrums. The emergency demands a surgical operation.' "

Beyond the obvious arrogance of such a position (there is little doubt Hooton considered himself and his progeny exempt from the "surgical operation" he calls for), Hooten says nothing as to whom should be entrusted with the power to identify the "social ineffectuals" among us who comprise the "malignant biological growth" to be purged.

Worse, Hooten's endorsement of the very arguments Hitler was at that very moment using to justify the killing thousands of innocent German civilians clearly indicates socially ineffectual thinking. By Hooten's own logic then, he is himself guilty of social inefficacy, and therefore worthy of purging. Oh the irony.

DAVID PRUTCHI, PhD, received his doctorate in biomedical engineering from Tel-Aviv University, Israel. Currently, he is Vice President of Product Development for Impulse Dynamics. He has over fifteen years of experience in biomedical and medical electronic instrumentation research, design, and management. He has published over thirty papers and holds over sixty patents in the field of active implantable medical devices.

MICHAEL NORRIS is a senior electronics engineer for Impulse Dynamics. He has over twenty-five years of experience as a medical device designer, including research, design and development of analog and digital circuits, microprocessors, and embedded software.

Jam-packed with info on Development, sparse on Design

I couldn't put this book down. It contains a good description of instrumentation, including analog and digital filtering, signal conditioning, data acquisition. The authors' background is in cardiac care (pacemakers, etc.), and the book seems to focus a great deal on patient contact scenarios, whereas I would have preferred some discussion of instrumentation of other signals such as optical techniques (e.g. pulse oximetry), thermography, perhaps imaging technologies. It's a great book for anyone doing work with defibrillators/pacemakers, myography.

Medical Compliance: This book is a *fantastic* reference for anyone who needs to take a medical device through regulatory compliance. It includes a succint introduction to getting through the FDA mazz, plus several chapters dedicated to EMC (radiated/conducted emissions & suceptibility, etc.) and safety.

Although you'll find a decent quantity of equations and theory, the book is extremely practical and hands-on, including tons of clear schematics for various affordable test circuits (field probes, Hipot, leakage, etc.), and simple, direct approaches to testing and construction.

If you're looking strictly for a book on medical instrumentation, this is probably not enough. You won't find details of advanced filtering (e.g., adaptive noise cancellation), chopper detectors, fuzzy modeling & logic, algorithms, etc. But even though it's sparse on "design", this book is very strong on "development". Note the emphasis on FDA in this book, and very little mention of the European Medical Device directives (which, admittedly, are somewhat harmonized).

Cracked open the book and saw designs from the 1980's....stopped right there because the book was ancient and out of date with regard to regulatory. And for goodness sake, the first chapters appear to electronics lessons rather than being useful if you are coming in to the medical equipment sector.
