"Doctrine, data and deals"...
By Phillip Taylor MBE
[[VIDEOID:moKD989REONHPJ]]
Professor Wood's wonderful statement on international finance law

An appreciation by Phillip Taylor MBE and Elizabeth Taylor of Richmond Green Chambers

Professor Wood told us at his book launch that this work is for law and economics undergraduates drawn from the seven main volumes of his definitive statement on the law and practice of international finance. That is exactly what it is, and it fulfills its purpose superbly explaining international finance law.

This edition is a summary of his 7 volume work covering the entire scope of the subject on a comparative and a world-wide basis. Wood succeeds in his aim of explaining the politics and the law, and how the transactions work out in practice. The chapter headings can be taken as lectures followed by questions and seminar topics which will be of use to lecturers and learners.

Philip Wood is a charming man to meet and the master of this substantive law with his definitive experience of the subject. His enthusiasm comes out clearly with this work which distils complex and confusing information brilliantly in a way which aids memory as he wishes it to do.

He describes the areas as `doctrine, data and deals'. How right he is! He gets the learner to go where he is as quickly as possible (a fine feat in itself), so (as he puts it) "they can then leap forwards". In this exciting and important area of law he does just that.

Of Whom the World Was Not Worthy, by Marie Chapian

"We must believe with all our hearts and souls that He is with us. He is a God of love!" So shouted Jakob, the evangelist, as the German tanks roared across Yugoslavian soil, and machine guns, motorcycles and Messerschmitts screamed in the hills.

Out of the sky came the Stukas. They nosed over, dropped their bombs and veered off into the cold blue. The wagon in front of them was hit. The donkey was dead, and the driver lay mutilated in the brush at the side of the road.

"This is war," said the gray-clad officer. "The only place you will be safe is in the grave."

Weak and divided, the Yugoslavians fought back. Their ill-equipped guerrillas chewed on the German army like vermin on the flanks of a stallion. They cut phone lines, laid mines, dynamited bridges and blew up armored cars. Their stubborn war cry was, "Better grave than slave!" But, for every German they killed a hundred Yugoslavs were shot in retaliation.

In the midst of this living hell, Jakob, Jozeca and other believers clung to God and prayed for both friend and foe. The enemies of their beloved homeland could burn their cities and towns, but they could not destroy their souls or quench their indomitable spirits.

Marie Chapian went to Yugoslavia and interviewed peasants, gypsies, factory workers, doctors, laborers, and officials of the Communist party. She wanted to know how the Christians' faith was sustained through those terrible years of war, famine and cold. She learned that they had simply clung to God with an almost incredible fait

By Jenny Sommers
"Of Whom the World Was Not Worthy" is a wonderful book that is no longer in print. I was so happy to find it used at Amazon. I loved the book and highly recommend it. It is the amazing historical account of a young woman who was a true soldier for the Lord during the devastating times of World War II in eastern Europe.

We are called to prayer
By Joyce
This book will challenge your walk with Christ. As I read it, I asked myself surely, will we all sit at the same table with such giants of Faith in heaven? This book shows us what it truly means to take up your cross daily, die to self and that "the kingdom of God suffers violence, and the violent take it by force"-that is prayer. That is spiritual warfare. Lord have mercy on me!

Small But Essential
By A. Ko
I have two Macaron books, this one and the one by Hisako Ogita. I like to make bullet points:

* Hisako's book looked slightly complicated. I've been baking for 25 years but never did a macaron. I knew they were harder than my usual cupcake so for some reason Hisako's book made me not try it right away. This book is VERY small, but in a good way. First, you can read the whole thing in 10 minutes to learn how to make a macaron. Second, it's easy to understand what she is telling you to do. Third, her pictures of her bakery look nice.

* She tells you how to make a basic French or Italian macaron shell. No frills. Good for a beginner macaronist like me. Essential. However, since it has no frills, I'm glad I have Hisako's book because Hisako actually tells you how to flavor a shell. Even with no extra flavor, the basic shell is crazy tasty though! Let me repeat, good for a beginner first time macarooner!

* What I don't like:
1. she calls for 2.5" circles. I made templates. Puzzled when I couldn't get the large number of macaron shells on a half sheet like she said, I pressed on. I believe this is a typo in the book. My macarons were HUGE. I like big cookies so it wasn't a big deal, but frankly, I think 1.5" is too small, 2" is just right, and 2.5" is too big. My husband found a true to scale picture of her macarons from her cafe and they are 2" in size...(three fingers thick). Hisako's are 2.5 cm large, so did she get her units wrong since she is French? I don't know. Her oven timing and temperatures were perfect for my extra large 2.5 " macarons though.
2. I added too much egg white powder since I live in Houston Tx. Perhaps, adding how much you should put in based on relative humidity would be helpful? That sounded nerdy. I think I will accept the blame for this oops :P
3. Other reviewers are right: she does not tell you how to decorate the macarons as nicely as she does. Nuts :(
4. I made my macarons pink with a dark chocolate ganache. It was VERY tasty. However, my ganache did not solidify in 30 minutes like she says it would. I had to pop it in the fridge. She also never mentions to double boil it. I prefer double boiling (putting it in a glass bowl over a pot of semi-boiling water) because it doesn't burn the milk or chocolate. That's just me. I was surprised she didn't mention that trick. It does taste extremely good though :)
5. Over and over she says use a Pastry 8 tip. I have the Ateco complete large round tip set and the Wiltons like 60+ tip pack. I don't have a number 8! Anyways, for a 2.5 " circle, I had to use my biggest tip. I don't know if others had that problem.
6. NEW ADDITION TO REVIEW: Just made macarons again with 2" circles. Oven baking time was way too high this time. I think 9 minutes works better but I can't say for sure because I kept lowering my time with each batch. I made the chocolate orange ganache. I believe the recipe is OFF. I put in the recommended 1 tsp of orange extract and 1 orange peel zested and my macarons now have a bitter initial taste to them that I hate. I'm quite unhappy with today's batch :(. I'm guessing it's best to use 1/4 a teaspoon of extract to be safe. 2" macarons are better :)

I'm adding a picture to my review of my first attempt at macarons. Check it out. Hope this was helpful.

I'm very glad I bought the book, even with the "flaws". Who knows if it was her book or me... It's still a wonderful beginner macaroner book.

ANOTHER NEW ADDITION TO REVIEW (7/17/2011)
* Hey guys, I found a book that tops this one for a basic recipe. With Macarons I could never get the cookie perfect. I suggest trying Mad About Macarons! for your after-beginner book. It still took me 5 tries to get the cookie perfect but I just did it today. The book is by Jill Colonna. I mix recipes from the Macarons book with this book, for fillings and stuff. But for the cookie part, I use this new book. The ingredient ratios are different, you need a few more tools, but it tells you how to get perfect macaron circles and I no longer get cracks or oil stains or burnt shells! I'll write a sep review for that book so please see that. THANKS!

If you're up for the challenge, this is a great book for you!
By Amazon Customer
Okay, 5 stars for the recipes, but macarons are one of the hardest pastry items to make. Have not successfully made one to this day. All fall flat or the batter doesn't turn out right, definitely a difficult process. Book is great and filled with wonderful recipes, not going to give it one star because I can't make one...lol. If you're up for the challenge, this is a great book for you.

Review
Scholars interested in the intersections of periodical discourse and empire will also welcome these volumes. Review

This well-conceived and innovative volume breathes new life into LARSP, extending the number of languages to which it has now been applied to 24, with the promise of more to come. Not only does it thus make LARSP available to many more clinicians around the world, but by providing a common template for linguistic comparison it also gives added impetus to crosslinguistic research into both typical and atypical language use and development.

(Mick Perkins, University of Sheffield, UK)

This second volume of research on LARSP provides important new information on 12 Asian, European and South African languages. Each chapter offers a concise overview of that language's grammar, a synopsis of research on children's grammatical development and a language-specific profile chart. Along with a chapter providing a fresh look at LARSP stage V in English-speaking children, this unique book will be a valuable resource to clinicians and researchers. (Thomas Klee, University of Hong Kong, Hong Kong)

Jacquard's Web: How a Hand-Loom Led to the Birth of the Information Age, by James Essinger

Circuits from silk? Today's technophiles probably have no idea how much today's computer technology owes to the invention of one ingenuous textile manufacturer in nineteenth-century France. Here, master storyteller James Essinger shows through a series of remarkable and meticulously researched historical connections how the Jacquard loom kick-started a process of scientific evolution which would lead directly to the development of the modern computer.
Jacquard's 1804 invention, a loom which used punch cards with stored instructions for weaving different patterns and designs, enabled the master silk-weavers of Lyons to weave fabrics 25 times faster than the competition. Here, Essinger reveals the plethora of extraordinary links between that innovation in weaving and today's computer age, introducing us to the intriguing and colorful people who paved the way. The book concludes by bringing the story completely up-to-date with the latest developments in the World Wide Web and the fascinating phenomenon of artificial intelligence.
Attractively illustrated and compellingly narrated, Jacquard's Web presents an eye-opening and scarcely known history that will prove fascinating to readers of popular science, especially those interested in the history of science, technology, and computing, as well as professional scientists, historians, and students.

From Booklist
Doron Swade's Difference Engine (2001) recounted the computer's conceptual origin with Charles Babbage, who, as readers discover from Essinger, borrowed from the technology of silk weaving a means of programming his calculating machine. It was the punched card, familiar in computer rooms until the 1960s and which continues a vestigial existence in the punch-card ballot. Its inventor in 1804? Joseph-Marie Jacquard of Lyons, France. Essinger bolsters Jacquard's thin but eventful biography by outlining the subsequent applications of his idea. In addition to clarifying the technical significance of the punched card, Essinger engagingly introduces the personalities-- Babbage, of course, but Lord Byron's daughter, Ada, and IBM chief Thomas Watson, too--whose lives crossed with Jacquard's punched card. Following Babbage's failure, Essinger relates, the punched card was improved on by Herman Hollerith, inventor of automatic tabulating machines, and by Howard Aiken, developer of arguably the first general-purpose computer, the Harvard Mark I in 1944. Essinger's perceptive commentary makes for interesting reading, and his work is a fluid contribution to the history of the computer. Gilbert Taylor

Review

"With wit and imagination, Essinger has woven a marvelous tapestry celebrating this rugs-to-riches story and the unlikely birth of the information age."--Entertainment Weekly

"Jacquard's Web is more than the biography of a man and his machine. Mr. Essinger moves from the Industrial Age to the Information Age, connecting the loom, step by step, to the Harvard Mark I, the first proper computer, presented to the public in 1944.... Essinger tells his story with passion and with a gracious willingness to help the lay reader grasp the intricacies of technology."--Wall Street Journal

"Essinger does more than weave together science, history, and business: he sheds light on the nature of innovation.... His book deftly shows how even the most surprising breakthroughs are based on the work of others, and need a host of enabling factors to take root. Without the appropriate financial, technological, and cultural factors, no inventor, regardless of passion, can harvest his brilliant machine.... His tale of cultural, economic, and personal factors that enable ideas to become real tools makes this book a welcome addition to the literature of innovation."-- Tom Ehrenfeld, The Boston Globe

"Anyone who enjoyed Tom Standage's book on automata, The Mechanical Turk, will probably enjoy Jacquard's Web."--New Scientist

"An original perspective...the thread that runs through it--the relation of everything that has come since to the principle of the Jacquard loom--quite compelling."--Walter Gratzer, King's College London

computers made interesting
By Heli
As the least technologically-minded person I know I bought this book because I wanted to find out what computers really are and how they've come to dominate our lives today. The book didn't disappoint. It performs the unlikely paradox of making computing interesting - fascinating in fact.

This is because Jacquard's Web is such a human story. The author breathes life into some incredibly interesting characters - an ancient Chinese princess, two cheeky monks from Constantinople who perform the first recorded instance of industrial espionage when they sneak silk-worm eggs out of ancient China in their walking sticks, the greedy kings and queens of Europe and their unquenchable desire for luxurious fabrics, Napoleon, the fascinatingly eccentric Victorian computer pioneer Charles Babbage and his friend Ada Lovelace - daughter of the notoriously sexually rapacious poet Lord Byron, and of course dedicated, ingenious Jacquard himself.

I was surprisingly fascinated by the more modern portion of the story: Essinger's account of the trials and tribulations of Herman Hollerith and 1890 US Census when the US government struggled to find new technology to cope with the unprecedented mass of data that was pouring in. (Jacquard's punched card technology did the trick) and the account of the dawn of IBM.

This is a friendly, frequently very funny tale, and - for me - an enjoyable and truly memorable initiation into our high tech world of IT and the computer. I thoroughly recommend it.

How an Idea can Change the World
By J. Brian Watkins
Mr. Essinger's writing exceeded all expectation--he is a gifted teller of history and even more gifted at drawing out the threads of technological developments. It takes some time for the real changes of society to become apparent--indeed, my cell phone shares a name and essential function with a device invented over a hundred years ago but who would have thought that such a simple idea could so drastically change the world. The most engaging histories draw on unexpected sources to shed an unexpected light upon the events in question. James Burke was a master of this with his Connections series--think of Jacquard's Web as a more focused version of Burke's incredibly discursive journeys. No better example of the maxim, "a picture is worth a thousand words" comes to mind than the fascinating story of the picture that is found on the very first page of the story.

Essinger demonstrates how Mr. Jacquard's idea of using punched cards created a revolution. He compares and contrasts Jacquard's success with the failure of Charles Babbage by showing how an incremental technological advancement was necessary, i.e. Herman Hollerith's tabulator. But the story is basically familiar to most anyone who would be interested in this volume. Essinger excels at demonstrating the incredible importance of the personal traits of historical figures. Babbage's temper and inability to stick to his original idea killed his chance at demonstrating the power of his ideas. Hollerith's persistence, on the other hand, took a simple idea and polished it until its value was indisputable. It is a very sympathetic portrayal of a man, Babbage, who saw the promised land that he could never enter.

Frankly, it is impossible for this reviewer to adequately portray the power of Mr. Essinger's seemingly effortless ability to teach. This is that rare book that demands a quick trip to the bookstore or a check of that tempting box--"overnight delivery."

Humanising the machine
By Anthony Adolph
James Essinger's book takes us on an amazing journey from Napoleonic France, through Victorian London and on to the otherwise bewildering offices of IBM and the other giants of the computer era.

On a basic level, this is a very readable history of computers, from the complexities of the modern era back through the stages that led to their invention - and then, most importantly, to the very roots of the idea - the first spark that lit a conflagration - in the mind of an otherwise obscure French silk weaver, Joseph-Marie Jacquard.

The book is far more than that, though. On another level, it is a series of brilliant recreations of the key stages in the computer's growth. We are zoomed into the frenetic world of Napoleonic Lyons; led by the writer's genteel hand into the polite salons of Victorian London and introduced to the likes of the Duke of Wellington and Ada Lovelace, daughter of none other than the great Byron, and then ushered on through the now rather wierd, geeky world of early-mid 20th century computerdom.

On yet another level, it does something that I feel needed doing for a long time. As an historian, and despite using them all the time, I had always felt computers were something rather alien, rather nasty. They're not things that you normally think about being rooted firmly in 18th and 19th century history. Yet here they are, in the true historical context, and suddenly a lot less scary.

What a wonderful read, for historian, computer-buff and any reader who delights in a cracking story grippingly told.

SPICE is good for something
By Daniel
Robert Pease is certainly one of the legends in analog circuit design.
His contempt for SPICE simulation is quite well known in the community.
But I have to disagree...
I had to brush up on my filter design knowledge and I had a surprise:
The section on BPF and notch filters contains errors... many. And they are
not simply type setting errors. For instance in one of the filters a value is labeled
as 100pF, while it should be 100nF (P140). Then in another example he got the
resonance frequency of the filter very wrong (P264). Resistor references are wrong labeled (P264)

If he would have used SPICE he would have discovered that there is a sloppy
mistake somewhere. The prototype would not worked either, but this would take a lot longer
to solder up the circuit
Obviously /rap knows how to calculate filters, but he is so confident that he makes
casual mistakes.
But this all does not matter, because as soon as you make an effort to understand
the subject matter, the errors become obvious.
Someone should have proof-read the book before publishing however.
Otherwise it is one of the best books on electronics I ever bought. It is not trivial and the title
is misleading. "World class designs" ... anybody who thinks this is just a collection of circuits you
can rip off... not so. This is a book which teaches the finer aspects of analog circuit design.
Not really for beginners however, and there is some math you need to understand.
He shares some knowledge in electronics, you will never learn in school.
Also he talks about a general approach to any design (if not life in general).
Do not dismiss it lightly

glaring errors, use with caution
By atlantic1
The section describing the application of the Routh stability criterion (pages 10,11) has calculation errors for both matrices taken as examples, although the theory is presented correctly. That is pretty disturbing in a book claiming to deal with world class designs, and was enough to discourage me from reading further. Bob Pease cannot defend himself anymore so I'll stop here, but I definitely do not recommend this book, use your money on Gray/Meyer for clean, basic analog (mostly bipolar) IC design, or on Carusone/Johns/Martin for advanced (mostly CMOS) IC design.

Great collection of tips, tricks and useful circuits
By Ssound
This book is a great collection by Bob Pease, most chapters (or articles) are good, some are stellar and only a few are subpar. Some chapters are very very simple, for instance chapter 4 "Finding the perfect opamp" could be described as "chapter 0 of any standard opamp text book", im not saying the information there is not useful, its just a first day at school in 101 opamp theory.

What makes this book different from say a standard opamp text book are the tips and tricks, rules of thumb and case studies offered by the authors. The case study of chapter 9 and the Zoo circuit at the end are both particularly great, chapter 9 in my opinion is probably the best one, it is the closest to having an analog engineer sitting next to you and explaining his methodology and his circuits, in this chapter the author gives a lot of great tips, and a minimum math rule of thumb and intuitive approach to circuit design, he concludes his chapter by analyzing a complete circuit, not just an idealized part, he will through the entire circuit which is not small at all, opamp through opamp, component through component, and explain why everything is there, and why did he choose such values, he will then calculate such values using his rules of thumb and therefore avoiding heavy math derivations. Also in that chapter it is described a very useful practical approach to stabilize some feedback loops without going deep into feedback theory.

A similar chapter is chapter 3 in which the author explains his methodollogy to designing circuits by laying out simple function blocks and progressively adding limitations, but not the entire circuit is analyzed.

Chapter 5 on noise is great, with examples of noise calculations and an applied example using instrumentation amplifiers a load cell and ADCs.

A considerable chunk of the book is devoted to Analog filters (4 chapters in total, low pass, hi pass, bandpass, band-reject), the filter theory is a bit messy in my opinion, and the author references a lot of graphs, facts and tables which are not provided in the book, instead of providing such material, the author refers to another book in which such graphs, tables and facts can be located. That to me is very messy, having to buy, rent, download, or borrow another book to see what the author is talking about is not really my cup of tea, he will say stuff like "By looking at the graph in the reference book mentioned at the beginning of the chapter, it is apparent that the filter must be a 5th order...".

Also considering that the vast amount of filters covered in this book are available in many standard opamp books such as the one by Sergio Franco or Valkenburg's book, it makes all of these chapters in my opinion feel like a bit of a filler in this book, which in my humble point of view should focus more on unconventional circuits or stuff not available everywhere else. Still, the author offers normalized tables and circuits to easily calculate your filters, and that is quite useful. Also I liked that the author covers a small portion of passive LCR filters, only 3rd and 5th Butterworth passive filters are covered, but again, provides normalized circuits to quickly scale them to fit your needs, quite useful indeed.

The book also has a chapter covering a bit of layout, pcb, components, etc.. similar to "The Circuit Companion's handbook" however what makes it different from such book, or many of the books out there is that it offers a very interesting case study about the layout for a high power laser driver.

Another large part of the book is dedicated to ADC, DAC and general analog-digital interfacing, with a particularly great chapter on ADCs with case studies explaining different sensors and applications.

In general I would say this is a great book, with real gems in there, you wont become an expert analog designer thats for sure and you will not find the secret and holly grail of analog design, not all of the circuits in the book are "World class designs" as the title suggest, but you'll surely learn a lot of new tricks and circuits, plus youll get into the mindset of some of the best analog designeers, and hopefully try to apply it on your own designs..

If your are an analog designer or hoping on becoming one, this book is for you. Dont be fooled by the fact that the editor (Bob Pease) mentions that the math in there is at the highschool level, yes you wont find big differential equations or Fourier series and such, but you definitely need a solid background in electric circuit theory, control theory, opamps, transistors and some electromagnetic theory to fully understand the content of this book, stuff like poles, zeros, transfer functions, Bode plots, compensation techniques, opamp equations, etc.. are mentioned all the time, it is not a begginers book.
