An Onslaught of Survival Situations Define This Fun, Well Illustrated Book

My teenage son reads a lot of survival books, and this summer it was clear that it's paying off. This summer, when we were out on a week-long kayaking trip, he was more prepared than I was and his fire-making skills were getting fine tuned.

This is one of the coolest survival books I've read. Anyone who likes comics will be predisposed to liking this book, as each chapter is illustrated with some cool comic-styled illustrations: a truck goes off a cliff in one scene, another shows an attacking bear, and still another captures a drowning swimmer. And if you're interesting in survival dramas (films about shipwrecks and climbing expeditions gone wrong, for instance) you'll also love this book. More on that later.

Like most survival books in this genre, this one breaks things down into scenes and types of survival: water emergencies, broken-down cars, being lost in the desert, being snowbound, surviving a twister, and so on. The list goes on and on, which is what is cool about this book, as it moves through a range of different skill sets.

What I like most about this book is the combo of graphic design (every page is new and interesting, with cleverly designed sections) and compelling narratives. It's not a simply how-to book, but instead one in which the authors talk you through what you might deal with. Turning to a random page, I find this description, for instance "Tornadoes occur on every continent except for remote Antarctica, but the United States is the nation where they strike the most. The is due to America's size, central flatlands, and intersecting weather patterns." So the book is informational, draws you in, and then offers a wide range of advice. (This twister section is particularly nice, as it doesn't assume that everyone has a terrific basement to hide in. Mobile homes are covered, for instance, as well as being trapped out in the open.)

So what are the problems with this book? As I mentioned, this book seems geared for an audience that is into survival-themed dramas. As the authors make clear, some of what is covered in this book is a bit sensational and unlikely to actually happen to you. Being prepared to survive means being ready for anything. However, parts of this book are more unrealistic than others. For instance, the section on surviving urban brawls and violence and the section on surviving a home invasion simplify things a bit. You could write an entire book on either one of those topics -- and some authors have -- but this book deals quickly with each very distinct situation. Even though the authors suggest flight (vs. fight) if possible, the way this book is illustrated really makes FIGHT! look more exciting and worthwhile. So it's a fun book to read if you want to imagine various scenarios, but this is not a plodding, practical book about preparedness. Instead, it's a book about imagining all of what could possibly go wrong, which makes for a fun read ... but a book that needs to be complemented with some more practical survival guides.

Overall, I highly recommend this book. It's definitely worth reading and rereading.

Shockingly Revealing

This book is one of the best researched and put-together books I've read in a very long time. I've always thought of myself as a rational and scientific. Well, I was wrong! The book is supported by studies and scientific papers all of which are cited and can be examined by the reader. I'm a physician. So, the evidence-based approach works very well for me. However, the book is not as dry as textbooks or articles found in scientific journals. It is also not a self-help book, although it gives a thorough insight about what you've considered rational behaviour. Highly recommended.

"It gets at the heart of irrational thinking, and how common sense is often based on irrational thinking. It is very impressive how the author has been able to take voluminous amounts of research to build a case on why it is so challenging for humans to think and behave rationally.

Still a good book on this topic, despite dating to 1992

This is a reissue of a 1992 book, and there are now many books available on cognitive biases. But research in this area since 1992 shows that the book is by no means outdated, and the findings Sutherland reports are generally still valid. So I would say that this book remains one of the better books on cognitive biases, because it has an extensive scope, summarizes many studies, and summarizes the conclusions of those studies, all in a style which is quite readable and sometimes entertaining. I can see how some 'sensitive' readers might get rubbed the wrong way by Sutherland's occasional bluntness, but I like the way he gets to the point and doesn't mince words.

Because the book covers its scope well and I can find no real fault with it, I see no reason to give it less than 5 stars. Here are some key points from the book:

(1) 'Irrationality' involves cognitive processes which are prone to result in inaccurate conclusions or suboptimal decisions relative to available evidence and time constraints. So irrationality will often lead to worse outcomes, but not always ('luck' is a factor also).

(2) The prevalence of irrationality may be due to our cognitive processes having been evolved for physical and social environments which are different from modern life. So what appears as a problematic 'bias' today may have been adaptive in the distant past. But we also need to remember that heuristic shortcuts, though prone to bias and inaccuracy, can also be very effective in many situations, and in the real world we don't have the luxury of thoroughly analyzing everything (rationality is bounded).

(3) Emotions (which can lead to self-deception and denial), stress, rewards, punishments, and even boredom can contribute to irrationality, but the issue is mostly cognitive.

(4) As situations become more complex, we tend to become more irrational. So taking a more systematic approach to making decisions can be helpful as complexity increases (eg, listing pros and cons of options).

(5) A good grasp of basic statistics can significantly reduce irrationality.

(6) Many cognitive biases are tied to availability bias, which involves latching on to what comes to mind readily. Availability is tied to strong emotions, recency, first impressions, etc. Anecdotes feed availability bias.

(7) The halo effect is when people overgeneralize and infer too much about a person from a few traits, and it can undermine the effectiveness of interviews. It's generally better to assume that people are a mix of strengths and weaknesses.

(8) Deference to 'experts' and other authority figures, and conformity with groups (eg, peer pressure), are natural instincts, and they also provide people with 'cover', with the result that they can greatly compromise group effectiveness by promoting groupthink (homogenization of group cognition), increasing risk taking by the group, and even promoting violent group behavior. There can be a vicious cycle here, where group dynamics make groups become increasingly extreme rather than more moderated, and increasingly hostile towards other groups. Contrary to common opinion, sports increase this hostility rather than decreasing it. Groups may also be irrational because of individuals in the group putting their own interest ahead of that of the group in various ways (ingratiating themselves with group leaders, refusing to speak up because it may compromise their position in the group, etc.).

(9) People are often NOT open-minded. We tend to filter and interpret according to what we want to believe, and once someone has a firm belief, presenting them with disconfirming evidence can cause them to rationalize in a way that results in the belief becoming even firmer; we're good at 'making up' explanations for things. This confirmation bias can affect our basic perception and our memory, not just our cognition, and can result in 'illusory correlation', where we falsely perceive a relationship between things. So it's important to sometimes test our beliefs by deliberately trying to falsify them, simultaneously consider multiple competing hypotheses, and consider both positive and negative cases.

(10) Even when correlations are real, it's important not to mix up cause and effect, nor ignore 'common causes' (causes which the correlation between two effects, with neither effect being a cause of the other). When multiple causes contribute to an effect, we sometimes will pick out the most cognitively available one as the dominant cause.

(11) Combining implausible and plausible information tends to make the implausible information and its source appear more plausible and credible.

(12) Anecdotes and small samples are often non-representative of overall trends and can result in incorrect inferences. But beware that even large samples can be biased for various reasons (eg, self-selection bias).

(13) We often fail to recognize that many small probabilities can add up to a large probability in cumulative situations (eg, event risk vs lifetime risk), whereas the probability of an event will be reduced to the extent that a concurrence of factors is needed for the event to occur (ie, joint probability).

(14) A 'slippery slope' can be thought of as a process of normalizing deviance.

(15) We generally tend to be more concerned with avoiding losses than making gains. It may be that losses cause more pain than gains cause pleasure. Insurance is an example where we (rationally) take a definite but smaller loss in order to prevent an uncertain but larger loss.

Brett Milano is a longtime Boston-based music journalist who once interviewed Joey Ramone and Barry Manilow on the same day. He compiled and annotated the Boston punk history CD "Mass. Ave: The Boston Scene" (on Rhino); and has written liner notes for albums by Todd Rundgren, The Cars, and The Smithereens. He has written for "Billboard", "Pulse" and the "College Media Journal"; and can now be read weekly in the "Boston Herald" and the "Boston Phoenix". He is the author of the book "Vinyl Junkies".

The Trials and Tribulations of an almost famous band.....

Like the songs that Scott Miller wrote, the book snuck up on me a bit. I expected more info on tour antics and such, and there's some of that, but there's so much more. Scott was a very complex person -- which I gathered from the lyrics to the songs I listened to over and over again over the years (and try to figure out how to play). But there was so much I didn't know and this book brings it all into the light. Expecting a dry biographical read I started the book with the expectation that it would take me awhile to read it. But, since I couldn't put it down I finished it in under a day. Brett starts with the early days of Scott, but quickly moves into the band era, first covering Game Theory, the personalities, how they interacted and how the records were realized, then the Loud Family era. He covered the end in a nice way as well.

If you know the music of Game Theory and/or The Loud Family at all then just buy and read it -- you have no choice. If you've never heard of Scott, there's still a lot in here to enjoy since it's also a book about the trials and tribulations of a rock band that bubbled under mainstream for years with a rabid cult following -- and how tough the music business (and art in general) can be.

Fantastic history of an extraordinary musician and his catalog. Interviews with the members of Game Theory and The Loud Family (along with many other friends, family and associates) help paint vivid pictures of his musical journey and the creation of each of his albums, as well as offering insight into the (often) enigmatic man himself. A loving and fitting tribute -- a must-read for fans and a great intro for anyone curious. The re-discovery and rockn'roll canonization starts here!

An Essential Work about a Brilliant Artist; Read it And Thank Me All at Once

"Who's gonna have a little sympathy?" is the unanswered question at the end of Scott Miller's beautiful song, "The Red Baron". At the end of Brett Milano's wonderful book, you will. Not only for Miller, who fronted at least two if not three seminal bands during the 80s and 90s and briefly in the mid 00s, but also for his family, his many dear friends and collaborators, and the legions of fans, who seem to grow (deservedly) in number each day.

Miller was that kind of over-sized talent. Yet he was the center of a universe that never existed, and may never exist, but it's a universe we long for. A universe where well-crafted, meaningful (dare I say it "brainy") songs become hits, and songs like "Call Me Maybe" or "Mambo No.5" get treated with dismissal or bemusement. In the former world, Scott would have been heralded, instead of working in ever-increasing (up through his untimely death at 53) obscurity.

The book does so many things well. It captures the gentle, yet firm, playful, yet distant, personality of the writer of beautiful, beguiling songs with sometimes oft-cryptic words, and ofter-cryptic chords. It details his rise from bedroom studio maven to playing parties and clubs, first at (my alma mater) UC Davis, to San Francisco, and then ... the world.

But things did not go as planned. But maybe there wasn't a plan. There certainly wasn't any luck. Miller hit the scene during a weird nether-period (post new wave, pre-grunge) and lost momentum at bad times, when he needed it most. It didn't help that he changed band members with the same frequency that John Mayer changes girlfriends. And Brett Milano captures it all so well (a minor miracle): he details without seeming sensationalistic, and he treats developments, even tragic and painful ones (and there are plenty), with deft humanity. The book is a page-turner.

I could go on for another seven paragraphs. Let me cut to the chase. This is a seminal work. Brett had access to people (dozens) who knew Scott first-hand; they all seem to have deep insights, and fascinating anecdotes, and they spoke to Brett frankly. Scott becomes real to us - even those of us who never met him, but wished to, dearly wished to, shake his hand and thank him for the boundless genius and talent he so generously gave to us. This book sets a high standard, and should be read by all who admire Scott and all the gifted rare rock geniuses, such as Brian Wilson and Alex Chilton who seek to show us our truer selves.

About the Author

Ulrich Kohler is a sociologist at the Social Science Research Center Berlin (WZB). Dr. Kohler is an organizer of the German Stata Users Group meetings. Frauke Kreuter is an associate professor�in the Joint Program in Survey Methodology (JPSM)�at the University of Maryland–College Park, professor in the Statistics Department�at the Ludwig-Maximilians-University of Munich, and�head of the Statistical Methods group at the Institute for Employment Research (IAB) in Nuremberg, Germany. Both authors are associate editors of the Stata Journal. They coauthored a German textbook, Datenanalyse mit Stata, which was the predecessor of this book. They used Data Analysis Using Stata to teach several classes and short courses at the University of Mannheim, the University of Konstanz, the Free University of Berlin, and the University of California–Los Angeles.

Excellent text on data management

Kohler and Kreuter's third editon of "Data Analysis Using Stata", is 497 pages in length and is
published only in paperback form. It is the most recent publication in the series of texts on statistics
published by Stata Press. Stata is a well-used general-purpose commercial statistical application, and
its series of books on statistics have been popular among both Stata users and others who are simply
interested in the subject matter of a book in the Series. In fact, many of the Series books can be
thought of as texts on a particular area of statistics --- using Stata for examples. Others
are more Stata-specific, eg. books dealing with Stata programming, graphics, or data
management. Kohler and Kreuter's text is of the latter variety. On the other hand, many of the data
analytic principles discussed in the book are applicable to data management in general, so have
application beyond a particular software application. Moreover, the author's discuss more than just how
to manage data; they do so with respect to the preparation of graphics, and managing both
descriptive and inferential statistics.

Although a number of data sets are used for examples in the text, most examples relate to the 5411 observation
German Socioeconometric Panel data, a survey of German households containing demographic, income, employment,
and other similar type information. The author's guide the reader on setting up the data for various
types of analysis and for using Stata's graphical interace facilities. Stata code for all examples is
provided, and explained in detail. The reader gains an ability to use Stata for data management, graphical
setup and analysis, as well as model setup and testing.

I should also mention that the book includes a chapter on creating Stata do and ado files. "do" files
are simply batch files -- what are called 'scripts' in R and 'macro's' in SAS. "ado" files are
"automatic do files" or "commands", which are similar to R functions. The majority of the official commercial
Stata pacakge is programmed using Stata commands. Commands authored by Stata users look the same as those
authored by Stata developers. Stata also consists of binary code, but much of it is in terms of commands,
many of which were originally contributed by users.

finally, I should also say something more about Stata Press, which gives an insight into the various books
in the Series, including the text of this review. The Series began as a single text in 1999 authored by
Stata staff on maximum likelihood estimation using Stata. The remainder of the Series began in 2001 with
the publication of a user-authored text on Generalized Linear Models. Eleven years later there are 20 separate
titles in the Series, which includes one text in French and another in Korean. Many of the texts have
multiple editions. In total, with the publication of Kohler and Kreuter's third edition text, Stata Press
has published 40 books in the Series. Nine more separate-title books are scheduled to be published by the
end of 2013.

I highly recommend this book for anyone who has an interest in data management, in particular to Stata
users who must also manipulate data as part of job.

Very useful

Highly recommended for new users and as a desk reference for those more familiar with STATA. It can read like a book and allows a new user to slowly learn the system. No programming experience required to understand the content. Probably the best all around STATA book I have seen.

Easy to understand examples of the best parts of Stata. Would be five stars if publisher had included version 13, a version that has made profound progress in interpreting regression modeling.
