About the Author
Pat Libby is a management consultant to non-profits and philanthropies who views the work of nonprofit organizations through the kaleidoscope of her experiences as a long-time CEO, board member, academic and consultant to innumerable organizations.�Her 21-year consulting practice involves working with organizations to recruit executives, think and plan strategically, and find practical solutions to complex problems.

For 14 years until July 2015, she served the University of San Diego as the founding director of its Nonprofit Institute which comprises nonprofit-focused graduate programs, a research center and community education programs serving hundreds of people and organizations each year. The Institute is frequently cited as one of the nation’s premier academic centers dedicated to advancing the work of philanthropic organizations. �In creating the Institute, Pat realized a vision for an academic center that would interweave research, theory, and practice.

Her extensive executive management experience also includes 8 years as president/CEO of the Massachusetts Association of Community Development Corporations. While there, she transformed a financially bankrupt organization into a nationally recognized model for statewide CDC associations, leveraging nearly $200 million for Massachusetts community development efforts in the process.�

Pat is also �the author of two books.�The Lobbying Strategy Handbook�(SAGE Publications, 2012), an engaging "how-to" guide for nonprofit practitioners who are seeking a simple blueprint for learning how to take part in the legislative process, and, with Laura Deitrick,�Cases in Nonprofit Management (SAGE 2016).

A Boston native, Pat holds a graduate degree in Urban Planning from MIT and a bachelor's degree in Spanish and Sociology from Tufts University.

Denise A. Garofalo is Systems and Catalog Services Librarian at Mount Saint Mary College in Newburgh, New York. Denise previously served as Library Director at the Astor Home for Children in Rhinebeck, and held various technology positions at the Mid-Hudson Library System in Poughkeepsie, as well as positions in many other libraries. Denise is a trustee for the Marlboro Free Library in New York and has served on various library committees at the regional and state level. She has presented at international conferences, is a regular reviewer, and writes a column, ‘Tips from the Trenches’, for the Journal of Electronic Resources Librarianship. She is a peer reviewer for the International Journal of Library Science and the Journal of Library Administration and Management, and has written chapters for many library technology books.

Classic works collected, and explained

Ronald Coase is a Nobel Prize-winning economist, whose work is probably cited more often by lawyers than by economists. "The Firm, The Market, and the Law" is principally a collection of his seminal scholarship, although it does contain some useful new material. The opening chapter is new and shows how a consistent theory of firms and markets, as well as a unique conception of economics and economically-oriented scholarship, runs through Coase's work from the 1930s to the late 1980s (when the book was published).
Coase is best known for two seminal articles. The earlier article "The Theory of the Firm" is the seminal work on the so-called nexus of contracts theory of the firm, as well as an early source for the transaction cost branch of the New Institutional Economics. The nexus of contracts model treats the firm not as an entity, but as an aggregate of various inputs acting together to produce goods or services. Employees provide labor. Creditors provide debt capital. Shareholders initially provide equity capital and subsequently bear the risk of losses and monitor the performance of management. Management monitors the performance of employees and coordinates the activities of all the firm's inputs. The firm is simply a legal fiction representing the complex set of contractual relationships between these inputs. Besides emphasizing the importance of examining the various contracts making up the firm, however, Coase's fundamental insight was that the contractual nature of the firm does not preclude an element of command and control absent from market transactions. If a corporate employee moves from department Y to department X he does so not because of change in relative prices, but because he is ordered to do so. In other words, markets allocate resources via the price mechanism but firms allocate resources via authoritative direction. The set of contracts making up the firm consists in very large measure of implicit agreements, which by definition are both incomplete and unenforceable. Under conditions of uncertainty and complexity, the firm's many constituencies cannot execute a complete contract, so that many decisions must be left for later contractual rewrites imposed by fiat. It is precisely the unenforceability of implicit corporate contracts that makes it possible for the central decisionmaker to rewrite them more-or-less freely. The parties to the corporate contract presumably accept this consequence of relying on implicit contracts because the resulting reduction in transaction costs benefits them all.
Even better known, and even more central to transaction cost economics, however, is Coase's later article "The Problem of Social Cost," which also is reprinted in full here. In that article, Coase laid a critical foundation of modern law and economics - the so-called Coase theorem. The Coase theorem has been formulated in various ways, but one useful statement might be that: "When the parties can bargain successfully, the initial allocation of legal rights does not matter." Suppose a steam locomotive drives by a field of wheat. Sparks from the engine set crops on fire. Should the railroad company be liable? In a world of zero transaction costs, the initial assignment of rights is irrelevant. If the legal rule we choose is inefficient, the parties can bargain around it. Put another way, according to the Coase theorem, rights will be acquired by those who value them most highly, which creates an incentive to discover and implement transaction cost minimizing governance forms.
The Coase theorem has been widely criticized. The second major set of new material in this book is a chapter entitled "Notes on the Problem of Social Cost," in which Coase answers the more serious criticisms. That essay provides a useful intellectual history of the Coase theorem, as well as a trenchant defense of its main claims. One of the less-well informed criticisms of Coase is that he assumes transaction costs are zero. He does not, as this new essay makes clear. Indeed, as Coase points out, the interesting cases are those in which transactions costs are non-zero. In a world of positive transaction costs, however, the parties may not be able to bargain. This is likely to be true in our example. The railroad travels past the property of many landowners, who put their property to differing uses and put differing values on those uses. Negotiating an optimal solution will all of those owners would be, at best, time consuming and onerous. Hence, the allocation of legal rights becomes quite important.

Coase distinguished his work from other economists by focusing on the role of transaction costs-now a common theme in discussions of the new economy. While Schumpeter's phrase "creative destruction" may be more memorable, in the end it is Coase's views on transaction costs and the nature of the firm that may be the more significant (and certainly more readable).

The Authoritative Book on Transaction Cost Economics

This book consists of Nobel Prize winner Ronald Coases classic articles where the 1937 _Nature of the Firm_ and The 1960 _The Problem of Social Cost_ stands out.

This is _the_ book to own on the subject as Coase takes his time to explain some of the reasons why economists in general has misunderstood his argument.

It is also well worth reading if you like Oliver Williamson's elaborations on the subject as a reading of Coases original articles reveals much of Williamsons work as just that. If you haven't read Williamson's 1985 The Economic Institutions of Capitalism book I recommend it highly _after_ you've read this.

Give a new writer a shot

First, for full disclosure, I must tell you that I received a copy free in exchange for my honest review. Now that that is out of the way...

Aside from some spelling and fiction issues, I was pleasantly surprised by the story. The beginning off the book dragged a little as the author have us background information and set up the story. The main character, Aurora Contantine is a departure from your typical thriller\suspence -type novels, which is not a bad thing. The writing is a little stilted while the author describes Aurora. Some of the explaining could have been removed by letting Aurora show us who she is.

The story really picks up speed about halfway through and from there, breezes through to the finish. The writing got much better as well. It looks as if Mr. Vermette was so concerned about building the background, characters, and storyline in the beginning, that he forgot the flow. Once the real action started, out appeared as if Mr. Vermette could not get the words on paper quick enough, which was a good thing because it made the writing flour better. He wasn't worried about all the tiny details that don't really matter. He was now concentrating on the action and the details that did matter. There were a few cliches, but they didn't ruin the story.

Overall, this was a good, quick read from an author who shows a lot of potential. Can't wait for the second, rumored to be out in June.

Outstanding plot, characters and twists

This was an outstanding book for a reader of suspenseful novels like myself. I enjoy reading books lesser known authors they offer something that the more well known authors do not. They bring fresh characters, character development and imagination to the literary world.

I think anyone would enjoy this book and the characters that are evolving. I look forward to the next book in the series and think AL J. Vermette has a incredible foot in this door!

Another great work from Mr. Vermette. AL has been working as a writer and a multitude of other roles for many years and continues to work hard and put out good material. Kill Fest being another in his list of works with a strong female lead. Don't miss out on another awesome independent Author. Check this book out!

Editions of Blake's poetry which as an artist and printer he frequently engraved and published himself most often fail to reproduce his integral illustrations, or do so in poor enough quality as to negate the effort. This Complete edition from the Blake Trust, published last year in a Thames and Hudson hardback edition that is now out of print, should replace the b&w-only Dover edition (but not David V. Erdman's commentary therein, or his reading text The Complete Poetry and Prose of William Blake) for any reader. The 366 crisp color and 30 b&w reproductions here, culled from the scholarly Princeton University Press six-volume annotated set, are little short of a revelation, giving us Songs of Innocence, Songs of Experience, America, Milton, Jerusalem and the rest of the Blake canon in a form acceptably close, as Binder's introduction makes clear, to the way Blake wanted us to see them. Many of these works are currently hanging in a special Blake exhibition the largest ever at the Met in New York, for which the Abrams book serves as an informative and revealing catalogue. Hamlyn, a senior curator at London's Tate (where the exhibition originated), and the University of York's Phillips present prints, drawings, paintings, selections from Blake's own illuminated books and other relevant materials, such as snapshots from Blake's marvelous editions of Edward Young's Night Thoughts and Thomas Gray's Poems. Introductory essays from novelist and biographer Peter Ackroyd (Blake; T.S. Eliot) and Marilyn Butler, rector of Oxford's Exeter College, synopsize Blake's life and times, while extensive "label copy" situates each work as presented. Fascination Has Its Price

Generally, I enjoy the art works printed by Dover Publishers. For Dore, Grosz, Hogarth, Piranesi there is none out there better.

But volume of Blake's work is worth a price that is triples the rate for anything from Dover.

It is a beautiful publication with perfect color matches to the original. It offers the chance for the reader to deal with the text from the original or to choose much more readable type at the volume's end.

If you want to have a visionary's art and verse handy and home, this is the book to buy

Amazing Collection at a Great Price

The Complete Illuminated Books is a wonderful collection of facsimiles of Blake's original etchings. Because Blake's printings were so limited (sometimes only printed in a single volume and at most printed in 50 volumes)this is as close as anyone will get to experiencing the original prints of William Blake. I highly recommend this book for anyone who appreciates literature, art and their innovative intertwining by a master of both. A beautiful volume and an incredible value!

the original illuminated books

This beautiful paperback volume consists of high quality reproductions of Blake's original illustrated books. It is an incredible bargain. The pictures are powerful and Blake intended the pictures and the texts to illumine each other. I've never disciplined myself to sit down and read the text from the engraved script; its not easy or natural since the print on many plates is small and faint; but it would be worth the effort. However, there is a type face version of all the poems in the back, to refer to when needed to make out a word. This is an essential book for anyone seeking to understand Blake's profound prophetic vision more deeply.
