Fun read for fans, but play the game first

I love that the P3 Side manga emulated the video game's art style so much. I can't believe though that they are only adapting the first two labyrinth's of the game. I hope they decided to make more because it's so fun to see both sides "animated" in comic form. Again the big downside is it's not the complete story, so fun read and collectible for the game fans, not so much the people who only wanted to read the manga.

Kindle version has issues....great counseling book though

The book itself is great. The only reason I didn't give it a better rating is b/c of the formatting in the kindle version. Clearly the formatting from the book to kindle was not done well at all...hyphens are misplaced, diagrams are broken up, etc. The kindle version should be as good as the hardcopy IMO. Amazon needs to get their act together. I'm really glad I'm just renting & didn't buy this.

This is an absolutely fabulous book for group counseling. I usually rent my books for grad school and then add them to a wishlist if I want to buy them. I am DEFINITELY keeping this book! It is so practical and explains concepts really well. I loved it.

Well written and romantic contemporary novel

Why I Picked It Up

I adore novels that involve movie stars or anyone famous, really. And I love the cover and fake to pretend romances. This was just full of things that I loved.

Plot

Catch a Falling Star follows Carter Moon as she takes on the job of being Adam Jakes’ fake girlfriend. Her family needs money to take care of a debt her wayward brother owes so Carter bites the bullet and takes on the job to get the monetary compensation. However, Adam’s exterior thaws and feelings start to evolve. But Adam’s filming is coming to an end and that means the arrangement is coming to an end. Are their feelings strong enough to last past their expiration date?

I really enjoyed this novel. It was well written with a great plot. I love the way that Kim spun the novel with the bad boy movie star being won over by the good small town girl. There was a lot of personal growth for both characters that kept the novel interesting. Other than that, the plot was pretty tame but engaging nonetheless.

Leading Lady

Carter Moon was your typical small town girl. She was sweet, caring, and selfless if not a little naive. She really cared for the ones that she loved. But she also had a backbone. She wasn’t a mess over a movie star like any other teen would be and she tried her best to stand up for herself.

Leading Male

Adam had layers, which is typical in this type of story. He had his bad boy persona that he broadcasted to the media. But on the inside he was sincere and actually friendly. He had some things that he was working through. I rather enjoyed his character once the exterior was shed.

Romance

The romance in this novel was one of my favorite types: fake to real. It was well done in this novel. There was a progression of feelings that made it realistic. The two of them were from completely different worlds yet they were still compatible. I was definitely rooting for them.

Other Characters

Parker was Adam’s manager. He was hardcore, a bit mean, and very strict. But he eventually warmed up a little bit so I didn’t mind him after that. But he was a constant in the novel so I figured I’d mention him.

World Building

This novel was set in a small town where Adam was filming his newest movie. I really enjoyed the homey feel that the setting gave off. I think that it was the perfect touch for the character’s story.

Conclusion

Catch a Falling Star was a very well written and romantic contemporary novel that I would definitely recommend.

Sweet YA

I’ve been on a contemporary YA kick lately looking for sweet, summer reads. Catch A Falling Star is just that! Small town girl Carter Moon lives in Little California and works in her parents’ sandwich shop. She’s perfectly happy with the way her life is now. No need to go off to New York or explore the world. She has roots in her town. Carter teaches the elderly dance classes and is not at all fazed when movie star Adam Jakes rolls in to town to shoot his latest movie. Adam is your typical arrogant child star turned young adult. He gets what he want s and he has an attitude. Carter’s best friend Chloe is the adoring fan, with poster plastered all over her walls. So no one is more shocked when Adam seems to take a liking to Carter. How did her friend make the radar and the cut to become Adam’s girlfriend?

Delicately yet realistically exploring addiction and the masks we all wear, Catch a Falling Star is a clean, sweet YA. We get a very clear picture of Carter, but not much fleshing out of Adam or the other side characters. I would have loved to know more about each of them! Carter had a functional relationship with her parents, she is down-to-earth and likable. She has the hard decision all seniors must make in the summer after high school. What to do, where to go to college, to take a gap year or to stay at home? In the vein of Wish You Were Italian and Jennifer E Smith books, Catch a Falling Star ended with a twist, and left me with a smile on my face. A cute read with some great poetic passages peppered through out. Thanks to Scholastic and Netgalley for the sneak peek!

Content: suitable for younger YA readers– boy taking off his shirt a few times, drinking at a party and kissing.

I have read thousands of books, but this is one of the best I've ever read. It made me laugh and cry. All great books bring out emotion in people. It caught me to the very end.

Gr 4-6-This story picks up a few weeks after the events in The Ghost of Fossil Glen (Farrar, 1998), in which Allie solved a murder with the assistance of a ghost. It seems that this sixth grader is becoming a ghost magnet. This time, the ghost is a handsome young man, John Walker, who enlists Allie's help, and it is only much later that she learns that he is seeking revenge instead of justice. With her supernatural association comes a string of unfortunate occurrences wherever Allie goes in her efforts to gather background information: spontaneous fires start in the school and the public library, and false alarms are tripped at the fire house. The fire chief sustains a serious fall as he tries to provide Allie with some town history. The protagonist becomes overly sensitive and jealous of her best friend, Dub, and has to patch up the relationship. Even her weekend of dog-sitting is a failure because her ghost alienates the normally lovable canine. There's more than enough suspense in this well-told story, and Allie is a strong, likable, believable character. A page-turner.

In this book, a second one comes her way and she begins to understand that she is a "ghost magnet" whose job is to help spirits make peace with their lives--or get revenge. The ghost this time is sensitive John Walker, who died in a fire, which he suggests was set by Mrs. Hobbs, the scary crone who runs the cafeteria. Each student has to interview someone for Elders' Day, and Allie is directed to talk to Mrs. Hobbs. Perhaps she will get to the bottom of the mystery. Or perhaps she will get involved in a terrifying adventure that finds her trusting the wrong people and endangering both herself and her little brother. There are a couple of missteps. A discussion of Elders' Day finds Allie and her classmates knee-deep in stereotypes (a deaf man who misunderstands questions and shouts out mistaken answers). And why is Mrs. Hobbs, who's identified as an elder, suddenly 41, especially when she looks twice that old on the cover? Still, this has real kid appeal. It's scary, but safe, and the relationship between Allie and her best friend, Dub, helps keep one foot in the real world. Be on the lookout for more books about Allie and wispy beings trailing behind her. Ilene Cooper

Cute book!

I am 22 years old and I could not put this book down. Maybe it's because I am going to be a teacher, or maybe the book was just good. I loved the ending. I guessed what would happen before the end but not to the extent that the author took it. I recommend it to any child who enjoys mysteries or ghost stories. It is definitely not too scary for most upper elementary children.

A Fun Mystery

"The Ghost and Mrs. Hobbs" is a great mystery story. This story starts off with a girl named Allie, and a boy named Dud. Allies teacher assigns every student to interview somebody and Allie chooses Mrs. Hobbs. The interview gets interrupted by a fire in the cafeteria at the school very close to where Allie was interviewing. Allie starts hearing things in her head and realizes that a ghost is telling her something about starting a fire and how he got killed in the fire. The ghost tells Allie that Mrs. Hobbs started a fire in her house that killed her husband, son and the ghost John Walker. John Walker is making Allie feel like Mrs. Hobbs is the one to blame. Dud and Allie go to the library and find old newspapers about the house fire. They find out that John Walker was engaged to Mrs. Hobbs but then she did not think he was good enough to be a father so she married another man. After Mrs. Hobbs married, John Walker was upset and started the house fire and now Allie and Dud know Mrs. Hobbs is telling the truth. I think this book kept you on the edge of your seat and readers that enjoy mysteries would like reading this book.

An invaluable reference!

This book offers invaluable references for travel, literature art...heck, even songs by Sting! I purchased my first copy while in art school where I couldn't keep straight all of the tales of love, betrayal and revenge in the ancient world. After four months in Italy and Greece it is worn, torn and lovingly wine stained, but it has served me well. I used it to decipher names on structures in the Roman Forum and to reveal the meaning of paintings in the Ufizzi. Without it my travels would not have been nearly as rich.

Bill Anderson has been a barbecue enthusiast for a quarter of a century. He began competing on the barbeque circuit in 2004 with the Chatham Artillery BBQ Team based in Savannah, Georgia. This is his first book.

Are you kidding?

The book is a waste of money and paper. It's completely over-hyped in the largely inaccurate description. First, it's not for serious BBQers much less "Serious Competitors" as the title says. This book is for you ONLY if ALL of the following are true:
1) you have absolutely no experience using a smoker,
2) you don't want to buy a quality BBQ book like Peace, Love and Barbecue (or any of the other books listed on that books "Customers Who Bought This Item Also Bought" link,
3) you don't know how to use google to do a simple search to figure out the most basic information in the book, and
4) you are willing to learn google to look up the inconsistencies in the book.

Here are some highlights: There's a chapter on food science that includes paragraphs on things like the boiling point of water. The author's point is that, if you keep the smoker temp below the boiling point (212 or so at sea level), it won't dry out as fast. And he says at a higher altitude maybe you would change that. Is he really suggesting cooking a pork butt at 212?!! Even in his pork shoulder section, he says to cook it at 230 or so. Most telling is the description of the book in Amazon that says it includes a chapter on "Collagen, Protein, and Fat". The chapter doesn't say very much (a google search would reveal everything in the chapter) and is one page long. Some "chapter"! At a 12 pt font, it's more like a paragraph. In fact the book is more like a pamphlet. My favorite is the section on marinades and injection. The author describes that marinades will consist of two to three parts oil and one part acid. Then he gives a sample recipe for pulled pork that is basically apple juice. The sample recipe is correct. You would never marinate a pork butt in oil. The list goes on and on. The author's food may taste good, but even the photos look awful. The pork butt has a black bark and the brisket looks dry as can be. You get the idea.

Some People Just don't get it

Been reading all the negative reviews. I have to admit Bill's writing style is a little rough, so if you're looking for a great literary work, you'll be disappointed. But - I actually read the book all the way through and I've actually tried the recipes in competition. I can tell you that my pork went from running at the back of the pack to solidly within the top ten on a consistent basis. Bill is a winning Competition BBQ cook and I've found him to be a really nice guy who has been open and accessible. When you're good and you have proof of that from other people, good people share what they know.

So consider what these people are saying. If they would approach their learning with a little more Shoshin and know that everyone has something to teach you, maybe they would have greater success in learning from Bill.

I found a lot to learn in this book and I am grateful I found it.

Excellent source of BBQ pit cooking techniques.

This author cuts right to the basic techniques of pit cooking brisket and other meats as well.He writes plenty of information gained from his actual pit cooking experiences. Unlike most other books, there are a few recipes but mostly just cooking and pit design tips. I'm not one who doctors up brisket prior to throwing it on the pit, no injection, no marinade, no special rubs, just black pepper rubbed hard into the fat. Following the authors suggestions, I've turned pretty good briskets into very good table fare. I would recommend this book to anyone interested in starting or inproving their BBQ cooking. In my opinion it's the best 100 pages on BBQ cooking for the money.
