Excellent book to start learning FEA, BUT...

This book starts FEA from the very scratch. It is good for an undergraduate course and can be used as a quick review for graduate level. The chapters are very well organized. Every single procedures are illustrated clearly followed by good examples. There are several software package including ANSYS and MATLAB at the end of the book with explanation on how to do some of the chapter exercises and projects. The book level goes as far as to teach you how to optimize a design like a torque arm structure using FAE (that's what you see on the cover page). As a student who have read each single pages and lines of this book and did the exercises, I have found several typos which could be misleading if I was not familiar with concepts. All in all, the contents are good, BUT, BUT, BUT it is very expensive for what you get (around 90$) AND it is VERY HARD to use. They have printed this 420 pages book on very thin papers (like onion skin) which makes it extremely hard to use. There is also no index at the end. Thanks to the authors for the good job.

Great introductory text for FEA

This is a great text for an introductory course for FEA. There seemed to be a few numerical errors or typos in some of the examples, but other than that I have no real complaints about the book. Used it for an FEA course this semester and it was straight forward to follow along with.

This is an excellently written textbook. I took a finite element course that the author Dr. Kim taught and he used this textbook. I enjoyed how the book used examples to illustrate the concepts in each chapter.

This book is spectacular! I received it as a gift and it renewed my hope in the human spirit and was a reality check for me. Bob Goff's honest, unapologetic, authentic stories will make you laugh out loud and question how your living your life. I've since given it as gifts and have read it at bedtime to both my kids. There is life lessons and reminders that would benefit everyone. I've given it to my atheist and agnostic friends comfortably knowing they as non believers would enjoy it. I would normally stay way out of that territory! They all really enjoyed it and we found some common ground. Not all christians want to change your beliefs. This is simply about what love does.

He ripped apart the cruel motives behind the industrial, economic, educational, social and political policies of Europe against all those countries it invaded and captured with main focus on how it affected India, whose history has been made across different races over centuries of suffering and learning not by material organization but by natural social cooperation and spiritual freedom.
He praises Japan and America for its different approach towards Nationalism unlike Europe. He appreciates the ideology of these Nations which imbibed power and wealth through love and admiration but not through ambition and greed. He warns the forces of Nation against the creation of politicians, soldiers, manufacturers and bureaucrats which he says shall bring down the entire gigantic organization of the Nation one day to bite the dust. That would be the day when the East would come back into its hay days and start a new history. He appeals to Japan and America to view the ideologies and histories of many countries like India which cannot be called as Nations due to their diverse coexistence of different races with respect and positive approach instead of insulting them and treating them as beggars.

The reader would be awestruck to come across such a vast expanse of usage of English verbatim in this book. I am totally perplexed by the way European organization has been constructively criticized apart by the author at the same time warning it of the detrimental effects it would have if they force upon spiritual countries like India.

The author seems to have totally targeted the European way of conquering the World through its massive Organization of military and commerce, but seems to have ignored the benefits it brought upon all those countries it went to. The benefits might be undervalued compared to the exploitation and conflicts it created in those Nations.

A book very much for our times

This Penguin reprint is important and timely. I believe that, among other things, Tagore's NATIONALISM should be thoroughly read and carefully thought about by every member of both the British Parliament and the U.S. Congress and White House. (There are also closely related things in the middle pieces of Tagore's CREATIVE UNITY and in his LETTERS TO A FRIEND.) The indictment of the nationalism developed in the West and the account of the contrasting ways in which human beings have related to each other in older civilisations of the East have the strongest application to our own times. Knowledge of them could also promote a more sympathetic understanding of current suspicion of and hostility to the West. The West has given much to the rest of the world, but Tagore shows and/or reminds us that it also owes the world the gravest apology. He himself writes at one point in the later CREATIVE UNITY that the post-WW1 move to 'internationalism' made little difference to the arrogance and greed that still governed much of the West's behaviour to the rest of the world. Those vices obviously still govern much of it now, as in the appalling invasion of Iraq. The full and proper making of that grave apology to the rest of the world could help promote worldwide peace by being the start of a more concilatory because penitent attitude in the West - to, among others, the so-called Islamic 'extremists'.

A first person perspective

This book really showed me what it was like in the concentration camps. I've seen documentaries about the Holocaust, but this book described life in a camp far more detailed than a show. It really showed how harsh and terrifying it was to be forced into a concentration camp. From the deportation of Sighet to Elie's last stop at Buchenwald, I never thought it could get any more suspenseful and depressing as his life went on. I encourage you to read Night because it will give you an experience that will be unforgettable.

The book was amazing. It was incredible how detailed it was without it losing my interest. Elie Wiesel was successful by transforming everyone's emotions to the book. The part that spoke to me the most was when the Germans were throwing the bread onto the train and they were just watching. That particular section was really heavy. When I finished I felt that I was mentally there. It is the perfect blend of desperation and hope, I couldn't ask for a better book.

Elie Wiesel, born in 1928. A Holocaust survivor. Wiesel earned the Nobel Peace Prize in 1986 for his writings about his World War II experiences and his lifelong humanitarian efforts to prevent similar atrocities from occurring anywhere else in the world. In 1944, young Elie and his family were shipped off to a concentration camp in Poland. Wiesel would never see his mother or youngest sister again. Elie and his father were later transported to Buchenwald, a concentration camp in Germany, where his father died of starvation and dysentery just days before the camp was freed by the Allies.

After World War II, Wiesel studied in France and later became a journalist. Ten years after the war, Wiesel told his story in an 800-page manuscript in Yiddish. A condensed, French-language version of his story, was published in 1958, followed by the English translation, "Night", two years later. Night has since been translated into more than thirty languages. An American citizen since 1963, Wiesel lives in New York with his wife & son.

About the Author

Leam Craig is a Consultant Forensic Clinical Psychologist in private practice, and Professor of Forensic Psychology at the University of Birmingham, UK. He is the co-author of Assessing Risk in Sex Offenders (Wiley-Blackwell, 2008), and a co-editor of the Wiley-Blackwell titles Assessment and Treatment of Sex Offenders (2009), Assessment and Treatment of Sexual Offenders with Intellectual Disabilities (2010), International Perspectives on the Assessment and Treatment of Sexual Offenders (2011) and Assessments in Forensic Practice: A Handbook (in press).

Louise Dixon is Senior Lecturer in Forensic Psychology at the University of Birmingham, where she is Course Director of the Continued Professional Development route to the Doctorate in Forensic Psychology Practice. Louise's research interests centre on intimate partner violence, child maltreatment and aggression in groups, and she has published many articles and book chapters in these domains. Louise sits on the Editorial Board of several international journals including Child Maltreatment and the British Journal of Forensic Practice.

Theresa A. Gannon is Director of the Centre for Research and Education in Forensic Psychology (CORE-FP) and Professor of Forensic Psychology at the University of Kent, UK. She is lead editor of the Wiley-Blackwell books Aggressive Offenders' Cognition (2007) and Female Sexual Offenders (2010), and is also the co-editor of Public Opinion and Criminal Justice (Willan, 2008) and Firesetting and Mental Health (RCPsych, 2012).

Slim, Trim, & Condensed

Love, Love, Love Johnny Finchham's Spellbinding Power of Palmistry book, or Apprentice to Pro. Absolutely adore his writing style and candor. Was thrilled to see a "New" book come out.

For the money - I would recommend the books above, as the Spellbinding Power of Palmistry is packed w/ a lot more info. This book is only 68 pages. With the exception of perhaps a few more detailed pictures & clarification(s), there's very little in the way of any "new info." Majority of it is contained within his other books. This seems to be a condensed version. If you're new to Hand Analysis & want a quick, condensed version, this is OK. Myself I prefer more indepth info & was looking so forward to 'new info.'

Otherwise Johnny Fincham's books are top notch & well worth the money. Love the cover on this pamphlet-like book, a bit disappointed, no new tidbits to learn from. 'Cest la vie~
