Practicing the Power of Now - A Powerful Life Changing Experience

This book has changed my life. I highly recommend it for anyone who wants to get in touch with his or her inner self and live a more peaceful life. Every time I read this book, and I have read it several times, I learn something else about myself. You can recommend this book to others, but they have to be ready for it. My sister tried to introduce me to Eckhart Tolle last year, but I wasn't ready for him so I didn't bother to purchase his books. I have learned that when it's time for something to change in your life, you will know it. Love this book and other Exkhart Tolle's books. I have practiced meditation for many years, meditating twice a day. Now I can meditate anytime and that's a wonderful feeling knowing that I don't have to wait for a specific time to be at peace. I walk through the park now and I actually hear the birds or the other sounds around me. That's a WOW for me. I accept others more and am aware of when I am judging them or other things around me. More and more I am in control of my thinking and that's powerful. All of this came about as a result of reading this book. Buy this book and you will understand what I am saying; that is, if you are ready for change in your life. Powerful book!

I am eighty four years of age and the last fifty five of that I have progressively came to the conclusion that I am not this body, not this mind but something far greater, but could not put that into proper perspective. then a dear friend who knew how I was wrestling with that brought me a plaque that said [Just as the sea is all of the wave, and the wave only part of the sea, so am I a part of God and god is all of me] I came to believe that whole heartedly, but still could not understand how I might bring that feeling to life. Eckhart Tolle teaches that it is necessary is to bring ourselves to that feeling which is life. I not only read this book but I study it and shows me that the gut feeling I have had all these many years was not just some nutty idea, Eckharts The Power of Now shows the way. I highly recommend this book to anyone who has the courage to question conventional wisdom and flawed teaching. You too can find the way.

Helped with anxiety

I suffered from severe anxiety, panic attacks, and mild depression. I purchased so many books and programs over the years and had little or no luck with them. I can't remember when and why I purchased The Power of Now but I randomly decided to read it. Actually, I think I was desperate and was hoping I would find the answer to my problems by re-reading all the books I purchased. Well, I'm so glad I did because it has helped me tremendously. I listen to this Audible version during my daily commute. It's great. I can now separate myself from my anxious mind and feel calm and peaceful.

About the Author
Stuart M. Wentworth received his B.S. degree in Chemical Engineering from Auburn University, Alabama, in 1982 and his M.S. (1987) and Ph.D. (19990) degrees in Electrical Engineering from the University of Texas at Austin. he has been a member of the Electrical & Computer Engineering faculty at Auburn University, Alabama since 1990. Dr. Wentworth's research has focused on the high frequency characterization of materials used for electronics packaging. He is the author of Fundamentals of Electromagnetics with Engineering Applications (Wiley). Dr. Wentworth has received numerous teaching awards at Auburn University, including the Birdsong Merit Teaching Award in 1999. He is a Senior member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE).

This book is amazing!! Out of all my electrical engineering classes so far, this book is the best! It has step-by-step examples with lots of diagrams. I haven't yet looked at the included MatLab programs, but I'm sure they're really good as well. If you're taking electromagnetics, even if this isn't your required textbook, get it! It will help you A TON!

Applied Electromagnetic; Early Transmission Lines

I first studied Electromagnetics many decades ago. I bought this book to review the material and because it includes MATLAB code. The book does provide these, and I am satisfied with it. In my opinion, it would be a good book for students, because of the many practical examples of how electromagnetics is used. Many books only present a bunch of facts and equations; a beginner might only see abstract ideas, with no notion that these ideas are useful in the physical world. This book starts by introducing transmission lines, and then keeps adding complexity until it explains Maxwell's Equations approximately half-way through the book. There might be some that do not consider this "pure", and think that Maxwell's Equations should be introduced at the beginning, with everything else an application of these equations. The problem with this approach might be, again, that they would just seem like four abstract, meaningless equations to a beginning student. The "Early Transmission Line" approach begins with something less abstract, and more familiar to the student. There is a problem, however, that the transmission line model in only an approximation to the reality of Maxwell's Equations. At each point in the development, up to the point Maxwell's Equations are introduced, the student must be told that what she was just taught was only an approximation, and now a less approximate model must be introduced. Faced with the choice of either introducing the subject with a model a student can relate to, but is approximate; or one that makes no sense to them, but is not an approximation; I think I would choose the former, if I were a teacher.

Since this book was first published in 1996 under the original title Case Studies in Information and Computer Ethics, there have been many changes in this expanding field of study. Computer ethics courses began infiltrating the curriculum at many universities and there has been an outpouring of books and articles. The field is more mature now with its own journal, Ethics and Information Technology, published by Kluwer Academic Publishers, and its own scholarly organization, the International Society for Ethics and Information Technology (INSEIT). In keeping with this nomenclature, we have opted to change the title of this book to Case Studies in Information Technology Ethics.

Also, at that time of the first edition the World Wide Web was in its infancy and most electronic commerce business models were still on the drawing board—inchoate ideas in the minds of visionaries like Jeff Bezos of Amazon.com. During the ensuing period there was an explosion of growth on the Web followed by the great dot.com crash of 2000. But while the euphoria about the Net has faded, no one is dismissing the likelihood that this global network will be a main thoroughfare of commerce and community in the future.

This new edition puts considerable emphasis on the major ethical dilemmas provoked by the Web and the Internet, especially in the areas of privacy, free speech, and intellectual property. Several new sections have been added, including an entire chapter on free speech in cyberspace along with a chapter on fair competition and Internet access issues. Free speech issues have emerged as particularly contentious ones thanks to the availability of automated content controls such as filters; several cases in Chapter 2 will emphasize the disputed role of these technologies in controlling discourse in cyberspace. There is also much emphasis in this book on property and interconnectivity issues that stem from activities such as hyperlinking. The property cases deal with digital music and the Internet phenomenon of Napster, and they also examine controversial issues such as Web site linking and the proper use of metatags.

Other topics covered by this book include security, software reliability and liability, and, of course, the vital issue of privacy. The chapter on privacy includes a case on Web bug architectures as well as a new case on the controversy surrounding Toysmart.com's customer list. There is a new section in this chapter called "Privacy and Public Safety" that includes two case studies on the government's conflicting demands to protect privacy and provide security. The first case study focuses on the FBI's controversial Carnivore technology and the demands placed on Internet Service Providers to cooperate in Carnivore's deployment. The Carnivore case allows students to consider the difficult trade-offs that must be made between security and liberty. The second selection, "Crypto Wars," is an updated version of a case that appeared in the first edition. That case now reflects the liberalization of encryption export policy and other important changes. The privacy issues raised by both of these cases obviously have greater salience in the post-September 11 world.

Also new to this edition is a secondary focus on policy issues for those so inclined to present some of these cases from that perspective. Included in Chapter 1 is an overview of Larry Lessig's framework along with more general background material on how to frame policy debates about the Internet. The final chapter is especially suited for policy discussion with its cases on the information infrastructure. These cases involve the problems of open access on the Internet and the digital divide. Included in this chapter are two cases on Microsoft: a comprehensive review of the antitrust trial and a timely discussion on the potential for renewed antitrust problems with the release of the Windows XP operating system.

This book presents a total of 42 case studies; 22 of these cases are new and several of the remaining cases have been updated where appropriate. Some of these cases (such as the pair of Microsoft cases) look at the moral propriety of corporate policy, while others look at what constitute suitable and fair public policies. Still other cases are based on the actual experiences of managers and Information Technology (IT) professionals who work in the field of computer technology or have some responsibility for managing a company's information resources. A few cases represent hypothetical but realistic situations.

The purpose of these diverse cases, of course, remains the same: to help students, IT professionals, and managers to reflect on the vexing ethical dilemmas and problems that are emerging in the information age. In this fast-paced environment the rules seem to change quite rapidly and the standards of propriety are difficult to define. Many of the cases presented here are complex and multifaceted, and hence they defy facile solutions: But the problems posed are certainly not insoluble, and, as a guide to effective resolution, this book includes an overview of theoretical ethical frameworks. The frameworks presented include consequentialism, pluralism, and contractarianism. They enable us to analyze moral problems from the viewpoint of consequences, duties, and rights. If used properly, these "avenues" of ethical reasoning can be instrumental in helping us develop a cogent action plan within the bounds of ethical probity and social acceptabilty.

Finally, there is a selective but thorough bibliography that includes major books and articles in the field of information technology ethics. It is organized by the topics covered in this book and it will facilitate the process of future research on many of the issues raised in the case studies and the chapter introductions.

THE METHOD

The case study remains a popular instrument to provoke students to grapple with complicated moral problems and quandaries. Cases present such problems in a particular context, and as a result they require students to discern the ethical dimension of a situation among a plethora of intricate, perplexing, and sometimes conflicting information. Further, they compel students to frame the issues carefully and to develop a tenable and morally defensible action plan. Since these cases are based on real-life situations, they prepare students for the ethical dilemmas they will confront in their own professional careers. The expectation is that they will be able to deal with those dilemmas more responsibly and purposefully once they have developed this valuable skill of ethical analysis.

The most significant benefit of using the case study method is that it engages students and requires them to become active participants rather than passive observers. This method is a form of student-centered education that heavily involves students in the learning process. According to Charles I. Cragg, in "Because Wisdom Can't Be Told," (Harvard Alumni Bulletin October 19,1940)

The case system, properly used, initiates students into the ways of independent thought and responsible judgment. It faces them with situations which are not hypothetical but real. It places them in the active role, open to criticism from all sides. It puts the burden of understanding and judgment upon them. It provides them the occasion to deal constructively with their contemporaries and their elders.

The cases in this book have been designed to stimulate dialogue and reflection on a well-defined set of complex issues. They are timely and yet embody enduring controversies that will remain with us for many years. They can stand alone or be used with supplementary material such as background essays, articles, and even news clips available on video. Most of the cases have been tested at various seminars and classes at Boston College, and they have been chosen because they can function as excellent springboards to productive and lively discussions.

THE AUDIENCE

Interest in this provocative subject matter has certainly intensified in the last decade. As a result, new courses and workshops in information technology ethics have proliferated on college campuses, corporate education settings, and elsewhere. It is my hope that this updated case book will continue to be a valuable resource for such courses and seminars.

This book can be used profitably in advanced undergraduate and graduate programs in schools of business, engineering, and public policy. It is most suitable for courses devoted exclusively to information technology (or computer) ethics, but it could be used in engineering ethics courses where a major axis of discussion is information processing. It has also been designed for interdisciplinary courses that probe the business and legal environment of telecommunications and information technology such as "Seminar in Internet Law, Ethics, and Policy." Or it could be used profitably in generic policy or ethics courses offered in schools of business (for example, courses such as "Social Issues in Management" or "Moral Dilemmas of Management"). This text could even find a place in some humanities and philosophy courses that treat broader areas such as practical ethics or technology and society. Lastly, this collection of cases can be an important resource in corporate management education programs. Professional managers also need to be introduced to the array of issues presented in these case studies. In any of these contexts this text can be used by itself or it can serve as a companion piece to a narrative or book of readings on computer ethics.

Ultimately the goal of this book is to help instructors sensitize students and managers to the vital importance of the careful and responsible use of information technology. It raises many questions, challenges certain assumptions, and even provides a glimpse into the future. But above all, the primary objective is to heighten our ethical awareness in order to help ensure that technology will not be used to create a future inimical to human values or the fundamental principles of justice and fairness.

Excellent cases, but showing their age

This is an old classic. Very well crafted case studies, they provide a model for someone who wants to write a new book along these lines. I taught a CS ethics course from the book and my students liked it. I wish there was a newer edition.

This book was in horrible condition. The first third-half of the book (I guess that's as far as the previous owner got) Is riddled with pen underlining most of the book. Furthermore, the last 5-10 pages are cut through most of the pages horizontally.

Informative and Scientific

I have been "in love" with Mouse Lemurs since I first saw them in Sir David Attenborough's nature documentaries. Wanting to know more about these critters, I searched for books but found only one - this one, recently written. It is apparently the doctoral thesis of Ms. Sylvia Atsalis. It is very thorough and analytical in keeping with its scientific origin. Lots of charts, diagrams and statistics about tail circumference ,migratory habits, the monthly percentage of types of insects caught and eaten and so forth.... This is a wonderful addition for our scientific knowledge of these animals. But as a lay person with no scientific inclination, I was still also able to get something out of this book. There are chapters on Diet, Reproduction and the Social life of the Brown Mouse Lemur (she often addresses also the Grey Mouse Lemur - most of the research to date has been on this variety). There is even a chapter entitled," A Year in the Life of the Brown Mouse Lemur".

Admittedly, I had to skim over the more in-depth sections about "Mean Body Mass" or the "Phytochemical Analysis of Select Fruits eaten by...." but I also came away from the book feeling I had a better overall understanding of this animal and besides, Ms. Atsalis provides referrals to other sources of reading on Mouse Lemurs.

And after all, this book is designed for those in the field, and as such, it is perfect. But I also feel the book has much to offer the general public and anyone interested in these winsome creatures.

Fantastic book, a must-read for everyone concerned about their mental health

I highly recommend this book to everyone who has ever experienced anxiety and depression. The author goes into depth to explain the scientific background for each of the strategies, yet the book is very easy to read and has many easy-to-implement tips.

As a coach for graduate students, I believe this book is an essential read for students and their parents. Given how much time students spend on computers and mobile devices, they might develop symptoms of digital addiction without realizing it. While most students need computers to complete their work, this book includes simple strategies to reduce the symptoms of digital addiction which include depression, anxiety, and poor sleep.

I was very impressed by the section on depression, because it includes a plethora of natural and inexpensive remedies, that could complement traditional Western Medicine.

Overall, the book is very well-written. It is clear that the author planned it with the reader in mind, as all the sections complement each other, so it is a fantastic reference for mental health patients and their families.

Great info in mental health

Mental illness is a widespread problem than most people realize it to be. Let's face it. Either you recognized the symptoms in yourself or know someone afflicted with autism or depression or diabetes -- the by products of modern lifestyle. With an younger brother diagnosed with autism, I was curious to know about the underlying factors. More importantly, what can you do about it? This was something pondering me for a long time. I believe I now have an much better understanding - thanks to this book, which busts a number of myths about mental illness. I found this book quite comprehensive and 'readable' compared to similar books on the topic. I always knew there were health benefits in natural therapies like yoga and mediation, but know I know why.

Good mental hygiene improves your life

When I was young, many people rejected the importance of dental hygiene. They preferred to believe that they developed cavities because they had "soft teeth." That a woman would lose a tooth for every baby she gave birth to. That if their grandparents finished up toothless, they were doomed to the same fate. It was all bad luck and genetics and brushing, flossing, good diet, and not using tobacco would make no difference.

Today, most people understand the importance of good dental hygiene, but we're still in the Dark Ages when it comes to committing to good mental hygiene. Mental illness is scary and embarrassing and seems to strike like a bolt of thunder. In a laudable attempt to reduce the stigma of mental illness, experts stress that it may be hereditary or a result of chemical imbalances. Either way, it's out of our control, right?

This author is a medical librarian and himself a survivor of mental illness. On both scores, he understands the importance of being well-informed. He has read thousands of articles in medical journals most of them describing the findings of clinical research in the areas of depression, anxiety, schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, and internet addictions. He introduces these papers and gives a brief summing up of their critical points, with special emphasis on findings which relate to self-help measures. AND he tells you the web sites where you can read the entire article yourself.

I approached this book with great misgivings. I grew up at a time when doctors were still struggling to convince the general public that they were offering something worth paying for. They did it by promoting the idea that health is only understandable by those who have gone to medical school and that traditional practices and wisdom were "old wives tales" - silly and probably dangerous. Many (most, really) books about "alternative medicine" are poorly researched and have a strong mercenary bias. "Massive doses of dandelion tea cured my cancer and I sell the only dandelion tea mix that works." You know the sort of thing.

This author isn't going to get rich selling his book and I don't believe that he wrote it with that intent. He does believe passionately that we can help ourselves to better mental health by practicing good mental hygiene - diet, exercise, prayer, and developing strong personal relationships. Modern medicine is beginning to adopt the same idea and these articles represent studies and tests from well-known and well-respected medical centers, universities, and organizations. This is not snake oil, but knowledge gleaned from scientific research.

So why doesn't everyone know about it? Because a pharmaceutical company can spend billions of dollars yearly telling the public about the benefits of its products, but there's no profit in telling you that turning your computer off and talking to a friend or taking a walk (or better yet, both at once!) will make you feel better.

When it comes to the workings of the mind, we are only beginning to explore a new frontier. In the future, our present "knowledge" will be laughable. But we can use the latest ideas and combine them with traditional wisdom to help ourselves. You are your own best doctor and (whether it's physical or mental illness) the best out-comes result when the patient and those who love him are well-informed and taking an active role in the process.

***** Mr. Jiang very kindly gave me a copy of his book, but that didn't influence my opinions one bit! I skimmed it and now I'm re-reading the sections that are of special interest to me. It's a book that should be in every household that has been affected by mental illness. That's all of us, right?
