Wonderful Collection of His Poetry

Oxford University Press has done it again! This book is an absolutely wonderful compilation of Gerard Manley Hopkins' poetry, letters, and prose. With all of his poems (including fragments of poems), as well as letters and spiritual writings related to his conversion and his joining of the Jesuit order, this book not only gives the reader a wonderful selection of his work, but also an interesting insight into the life of Fr. Gerard Manley Hopkins. I would recommend this master of sprung verse to all.

There lives the dearest freshness deep down things The supplementary documents and the great poems

For most readers including myself what matters in a poet are the great poems. These are the poems most frequently anthologized andmost widely known. These are the ones some of us read over and over again, and even try to memorize. But along with and behind the great poems are the lesser poems. And along with this is the documentation of a life, which in Hopkins case includes many letters. There is too in a critical edition of the poems another benefit for the reader, for in some cases we can see the variants and the transformations the poems undergo before reaching final form.
Again all of these background materials would be nothing without the great poems. In Hopkins poems there is the fresh and wildly original connection with Nature, the miraculous inventiveness of language, a way of seeing and saying like no other poet before. There is too the God - consciousness which pervades Hopkins works and makes him one of the greatest of all the religious poets.
This volume enables us to deepen in our knowledge of one of the English language's greatest poets.

A superb poet in less than ideal format

I am rating the book, not the author. 400+ pages of very small print - not the easiest reading for 80+ year-old eyes. GMHopkins is a superb poet, one of my favorites. His phrasing is perfect, the cadence exciting, and the story always rich. I have many enjoyable hours ahead.

Gordon LaVelle is an author of books and articles about bodybuilding and other fitness-related topics. His other books include Training for Mass; Training for Mass, Second Edition; and How to Be Thin: An Instruction Manual for Getting Rid of Fat and Keeping it Off Forever. He has a BA in Philosophy from the University of California at Santa Barbara. As a competitive bodybuilder, he achieved first runner-up finishes twice at the NPC California State Bodybuilding Championships.

Great job Mr. Lavelle. This book delves deeply into the entire history of our sport. As it says in the book, our sport was formed as an expression physical culture. Initially a battle of form vs. function, it eventually emerged as art in human form. The author also explains the transformation from the classic Greek physique, to the drug culture freaks of today. I had no idea just how accidental this change was. The author does an incredible job at analyzing these interesting events that shaped bodybuilding as it is today.
I have never seen another book that shows the complete evolution of bodybuilding. Thank you for creating such a great book! Kudos!

Bodybuilding as serious history

I think what surprised me most about this book is the depth to which it delves into its topics. The author devotes a fairly large section of the book to events and things that preceded the beginning of actual bodybuilding. I think the idea was that he wanted to put everything that came after its invention in perspective, and if so, his goal was accomplished. This is a pretty big book, but once I made it to the end, I very much got the sense that bodybuilding ended up as something very different from what it was meant to be, and totally the opposite from all the things that made people want to do it in the first place. I also never realized what a strange combination of events made it into what it's like today. All these thing alone made it into an interesting read.

This book definitely provides the best overall explanation I've ever seen for how bodybuilding became what it is. This is something I've never really seen satisfactorily explained by a single source. The book presents a good (and necessary) parallel history of steroids and other drugs and specifically describes how how they impacted bodybuilding. This I think sheds better light on the way bodybuilding developed and turned out than anything else.

The book also does a good job of talking about the people that were behind all the changes that took place over the years in bodybuilding. One thing I've known for a while is that a lot of people very much dislike Joe Weider, although I wasn't sure exactly why. Although this book doesn't go deeply into his life story, it definitely reveals enough about him for me to now understand the Weider-hate. I also now have a better opinion of Bob Hoffman (the former head of the AAU and York Barbell), despite the overt racism he displayed.

Another review of this book mentions that the author is a "real bodybuilder," but in reading the book this never becomes apparent, and in fact, I think this is immaterial. I say this because of the way the information is presented. Normally I would expect a book on bodybuilding, written by a bodybuilder, to be either a fluff piece or a bitter diatribe. (Thankfully, the book also isn't about Arnold being elected as governor, as the other review strangely implied. I think there's already a lot of books on that topic. But I digress...) This is neither. To me it seems almost like textbook, with bodybuilding as the subject. The author approaches the subject from a sophisticated perspective, and for some bodybuilding fans this might not fly, but for those want a good understanding of what the book calls "one of mankind's most unusual inventions," I've got to say, this book is a must-read. This is bodybuilding, presented as a serious historical topic. Definitely recommended.

Truth in Bodybuilding

If you are at all interested in the over 100 year history of bodybuilding and How Arnold came to his first fame. He would NEVER had become Govenor of Calirornia without his life as a bodybuilder. Also since Gordon Lavelle is a serious bodybuilder with no attachments to any of the for profit organisations like Joe Weiders IFBB. He writes with a very honest search for the truth in bodybuilding. While uncovering many of the "Sports" dirty little secrets IE: the Truth about the scandel with Arnold winning his last Mr OLYMPIA contest in Sydney, Australia in 1980
That story alone is worth the price of the book. This is also a very entertaining book written by a man who cares about his subject. To say that it is OUTSTANDING! Is simply the truth. Nice work Mister Lavelle.

In my extensive collection of bodybuilding books this IS the very best and it is honest.

Good But Flawed Review of Medieval Warfare

This is the kind of book that really turns my crank... obscure barbarian tribes, weapon use and tactics, tales of lost dynasties, imperial decline and the advent of new tribes, races and their own eventual conquest and submission.

The book has all of that.. unfortunately it suffers from an incomplete development of almost all of its major theses. Its review of tactics is most notable and I was impressed with the detial of the political organisation, and military mobilisation that Santosousso uses, but was left wondering how he defined his major thematic chapters.

The book starts at the end of the latter Roman Empire and the clashes between Rome and the Goths, then those between the Goths and Longobards, Byzantines and other barbarian tribes. These in turn switch to those of the Franks, the ascendency of the Muslim tribes and then the advent of the Medieval Christian warriors and their eventual demise with the nascent advent of citizen armies. All of this is great, but the narrative is marred by

1) lack of continuity: whole chuncks of history are leaped and interesting tactics and peoples totally ignored. ie. mongols are totally left out which is odd considering that there is a whole chapter dedicated to those perrenial losers of history, the Magyars.

2) The author throws in the occassional bloody story, but really once he gets our blood up with anecdotal elegance he switches to military organisation descriptions. These are fine but one gets the feeling that we would rather be reading some tales of blood and glory.

3) The description of miliary tactics and organisation, though good, omits a fundemental question: how were some of the tribes able to conquer others, and why did others decline?

I did like the grand historical sweep of the book and it did hold my interest most of the time. I guess the real problem I had with this book is that I was just expecting much more than Santosousso offerred me... I felt slightly famished after reading it... like eating an appetiser and then being told it was really the main course...

An inherently fascinating survey of medieval warfare

In Barbarians, Marauders, And Infidels: The Ways Of Medieval Warfare, historian Antonio Santosuosso (Professor Emeritus of History, University of Western Ontario, Canada) draws upon his many years of research and expertise to provide readers with an inherently fascinating survey of medieval warfare ranging from the fifth through the fifteenth century. More than just a catalog of conflicts, Professor Santosuosso examines the changes and the motivations of these conflicts with respect to their political, cultural, and social contexts. Of special interest is the understanding of medieval warfare as a means of carrying out religious imperatives, securing wealth, and enhancing personal reputations. This wonderfully written history expands beyond Europe to careful consider Muslim warfare from a Muslim perspective before the advent of the Crusades. Of seminal value to academia, Barbarians, Marauders, And Infidels is also very highly recommended for non-specialist general readers with an interest in Medieval History.

detailed account of medieval military tactics

Santosuo has given us a wonderfully researched history of medieval warfare. The book covers from the Barbarian tribes of the 6th century to the Mongol and Turk empires of the 15th century. Most of the major military engagements are covered along with the notable leaders of the respective periods. I found the general discussions of the political and military situations very interesting. But I got bogged down in the details concerning the make up of various armies. This work is a highly detailed account of tactics, formations and arms and equipment. Anyone interested in the nuts and bolts of medieval warfare will enjoy this book.
