Not his best book

I'd rather have one whole JP story than two halves. Couldn't put it down but didn't feel like there was a cohesive finish. Whereas all his other love story genre books made you feel sad you were done because of how great they were. This one made you feel sad because it didn't feel finished or leave you with any worthwhile closure. Tying the two stories together - now that would've been a fun ending!

This book presents the main ideas of modern industrial organization, many of which are explained without using calculus. Only the ability to follow logical arguments is needed for these sections. Oz Shy also provides a very nice introduction to topics which are typically not covered in other texts, namely the basic results about compatibility and the choice of standards as well as a concise analysis of specific industries.

Oz Shy is Economic Rock Star in Industrial Organization

In my Economics Graduate Program we are fond of referring to big whig economists whom we also respect as "Rock Stars". Oz Shy is a wonderful example of someone I consider a Rock Star even though he is less recognizable than Tirole and others. The reason for this comes from his ability to write clearly for both undergraduates and graduates and distill the key features of seminal models into accessible chunks of intuition, with no more math than necessary. I also recommend his book on Network Economics for all undergraduate and graduate students in Industrial Economics. If you get bogged down in Tirole, you'll feel like Oz Shy is breath of fresh air - these book can be read cover to cover or as a tool box of models. Highly recommended.

Really good! Before every explanation there is a great summary with the results that will be proven to be true mathematically, good exercises, several intuitive explanations. I would definitely recommend for any student or teacher. It is useful to use in class.

Easy to follow and informative

This book is jam packed with background information on constitutional law. I'm a legal newbie and could easily read the content of this book. There is a nice flow to each chapter and the author provides a great deal of pertinent information within each section. This book is a required text for one of my law classes, and I was intimidated when I first got it. It is extremely thick and I wondered how difficult it would be to read and understand. The author does a top-notch job of providing excellent background information. His writing style is concise, and makes the book much easier to read than I originally expected. Excellent book, especially for someone like me who is new to the field of law.

There are libraries dedicated to SCOTUS authorship, and it must be difficult to select which case input best helps summarize the decision without getting too far into the weeds. These books do a fantastic job of delivering a somewhat contextualized history, without making each case a deep study.

does senia have any backbone?

I was disappointed because the heroine of this book seemed to just lay back and let her family contradict what she done. Finally toward the end she grew some "lady balls" and slapped her brother. (Should have happened way earlier) this story line didn't keep me interested enough to purchase the 3rd book. It's in my wish list in case I just have nothing else to read.... But y'all know how that goes. Always something else to read! :)

I hate these mini novels. This book was not as good as the first one. Again we are left with a huge cliffhanger, only this time I will not take the bait. After reading the reviews for book three and finding out that there is yet another book coming, I have decided I am DONE!!

Harrison and Siena continue to keep their relationship under wraps, but someone is sending photos of them to her phone. As the next big race approaches, the cat is let out of the bag when photos are sent to Enzo's phone right before the big race. What happens next brings the whole story out in the open. Siena is torn between Her love of family and the strong pull she feels about Harrison. Harrison wins out when Siena follows him to London for some R and R, mostly hot sex. Then the love fest comes to a head when Siena opens the door to get the newspaper and is bombarded with flash bulbs in her face, BUSTED!!!!!! Now on to Book 3.

The pressure on villagers to change their practices created new values and forced negotiations between indigenous worldviews and the conservationists' goals. Kockelman uses this story to offer a sweeping theoretical framework for understanding the entanglement of values as they are interpreted and travel across different and often incommensurate ontological worlds. His theorizations apply widely to studies of the production of value, the changing ways people make value portable, and value's relationship to ontology, affect, and selfhood.��

I must’ve read the summary for this book too quickly before requesting it. I assumed that as the cover promised it would detail the birds of Guatemala from the chicken to the quetzal… So, I was a bit hard-hit by the academic “Introduction” that reads like the first part of a dissertation because it laboriously summarizes the concepts, terms, and all major research in the field of eco-tourism and at-length summarizes what will be discussed in each of the coming chapters, despite the relative brevity of the book as a whole. As a thesis would, the first chapter then summarizes the history of eco-tourism in the central region of Guatemala. The usual academic pattern is broken in a section called “Priming the Ecotourism Experience,” where questions such as: “What are the tour and the accommodations like [at the Proyecto Ecologico Quetzal]?” and “How do we get there?” are answered. “In the ecotourism program you will travel to see and experience the cloud forest and learn about the life and culture of the Q’eqchi’ people living near the forest. Your accommodations in a typical Q’eqchi’ home are rustic. Their homes are constructed with wood walls and dirt floor, and there is an open fire inside the home over which your food will be cooked” (28). Note, that his food was cooked for him… I doubt some that can cook will not be allowed to volunteer to help these extremely impoverished Guatemalans. Kockelman has a section later in the chapter on “Immaterial Labor, Incommensurate Values, and Intersubjective Intentions” and uses Marxist and Kantian terms to explain these but in the spirit of ecotourism, I doubt hard labor is the point of touring an ecologically beautiful environment. Chapter 2 is dedicated to “poultry.” Kockelman explains that the “local ways of framing the relation between women and chickens” frame the key themes of this section, “ontology (what kinds of entities there are in the world), affect (cognitive and corporeal attunements to such entities), and selfhood (relatively reflexive centers of attunement) (52). This is another typical critical trick. Kockelman starts with a basic emotional subject or the archetype of farming and chicken raising by small family units. The book is about ecotourism, but instead of exploring the environmental solutions and complications of the Proyecto Ecologico Quetzal program, the author digresses from the concrete chicken to the chicken as a surreal entity. Just as feces is feces, a chicken is a chicken. The chicken has been introduced to the region five hundred years ago, as Kockelman points out. Thus, the chicken or how the chicken is raised by women in this region are not questions of deep rooted ancient culture that needs to be preserved. If the chicken is still a nutritious and economical good for the locals, this domestic industry should continue. If parrots can legally be traded today and they can make the locals more money, they should switch to caring for this commodity. But, even if the chicken and the love between the Guatemalan women and their chickens must be protected, the criticism should not diverge into mythology or theology in a discussion of the “corporeal” and the “entities” of the “world.”
I do not recommend reading this book to eco-tourists or to ecologists because it is likely to frustrate and confuse both.
